45 students in 2 classes at Paso Robles HS, CA publish online narratives and portraits of 32 immigrants to their area. Local studio exhibits the work.
Cal Poly utilizes the project in one course. Passage to Paso/Paso a Paso is a collaboration of over 60 students from the history and journalism programs at Paso Robles High School. The project sheds light on the motivations and challenges for 32 immigrants to the Paso Robles area, and asks students to produce the printed and online material that portrays the journeys. The participants showcased in
this exhibit are diverse. They are teenagers, parents, teachers and grandparents. They hail from Mexico, Thailand, China, Brazil, the Philippines, Nigeria, El Salvador, Honduras and Vietnam. Their stories, which span two decades, are each unique and profoundly aspirational, revealing the far ranging tributaries that flow into the wide river that is the United States of America. These individuals, and thousands more like them, are writing the latest chapter in the region’s long immigrant history, which has included Native Americans, Spanish and Mexican settlers, Gold Rush pioneers, Chinese laborers, and Dust Bowl refugees. Most, it would seem, were fleeing hardship and seeking opportunity and hope for a better life. In the end, we offer these profiles as windows into the motivations, struggles, sacrifices and achievements of the newest residents of Paso Robles. The students behind this exhibition are tremendous. Over seven weeks, they conducted interviews and photo shoots with immigrants and wrote narratives to tell the stories they learned. These students have have been brave, inquisitive, and thrilled with public response to what they are doing. They have experienced the fulfillment of devoting themselves to another person’s story, and they have used a myriad of skills to bring you this exhibit. Longer articles (also in English and Spanish) are available online at www.crimsonnewsmagazine.org, PRHS’s award winning news magazine.
