PHS Speech & Debate Students Compete at Oak Grove
On September 25th and 26th, Pascagoula High School Speech and Debate students competed at their first tournament of the 2015-2016 season at the Oak Grove Warrior Invitational in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Students performed well in preliminary rounds, and several students advanced to elimination rounds.
Joseph Hasbrouck, PHS senior, advanced to the Quarterfinal round of Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate after an undefeated performance in preliminary rounds. Hasbrouck also advanced to the semi-final round of Duo Interpretation with partner Caroline Ko and was recognized in the final round of Extemporaneous Speaking as the 4th place speaker.
Jack Monroe Harrison, PHS freshman, advanced to the Quarterfinal round of Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate.
Vamsi Gunisetti, PHS sophomore, advanced to the final round of Novice Extemporaneous Speaking, placing 5th.
Zaniya Matthews, PHS freshman, also advanced to the semi-final round of Novice Extemporaneous Debate.
Emily Bowie, PHS senior, advanced to the semi-final round of Impromptu Speaking, placing in the top 12 of 82 entries. Bowie also finished Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate with a winning record of 4-1.
Tori Pullom, PHS freshman, advanced to the semi-final round of Novice Prose Interpretation.
Caroline Ko, PHS junior, advanced to the semi-final round of Duo Interpretation with partner Hasbrouck.
Ralph Dees and Quintin Brown, PHS sophomores, advanced to the final round of Congressional Debate to compete in the Super Session.
Thirty-one schools from Mississippi, Louisiana, and Alabama attended the tournament hosted by Oak Grove High School in the largest speech tournament in Mississippi history.
The Pascagoula Speech and Debate is member of the Mississippi High School Activities Association, the National Catholic Forensics League, and the National Speech and Debate Association.
