Sometimes you have to change your plans with student safety in mind.

With local heat and surf advisories leading to the cancellation of our High School Outdoor Ed trip, our creative faculty quickly reimagined the experience around community-building, collaboration, service, and social justice.

Today, students worked in teams to write skits for faculty to perform and shared their goals for the year. Tomorrow, morning games and then they’ll head out on a special local art field trip to explore some of Los Angeles’ cultural treasures.

And the best part? The Outdoor Ed trip isn’t gone — it’s just postponed. The trip to Malibu Creek as originally planned will go ahead in early March!

One month until our Farm Open House! Come spend the morning with us at our one-acre organic farm and outdoor classroom.

Families are invited to explore the garden, meet the chickens, and experience how students from preschool through high school connect with nature, learning, and community through the farm. Try something new. Follow an interest. Discover something unexpected.

Our first-quarter Middle School electives are here! Waverly electives give students the chance to explore interests beyond their regular classes, with offerings that change throughout the year based on faculty and student interests.

This quarter, students were able to choose from Flip Book Animation, Hip Hop Dance, Japanese Language and Culture, Time to Thrive and more.

From animation and dance to language, culture and wellness, there’s plenty of room to explore, experiment and find something that sparks curiosity.

Murals tell the story of a community.

Waverly is proud to have two new murals celebrating the people, traditions and values that make our school community special.

In the Middle School yard, Middle School students worked with Upper School art teacher Beatriz Valls Rodriguez last spring to create a mural of their own. In the Elementary School library, artist and Waverly parent Laina Miller brought students’ ideas to life in a mural inspired by what they believe is at the heart of Waverly.

Look closely at both and you’ll find references to some of our favorite traditions and places: the crossed-arm gesture from Roseyanna, our Elementary School meeting tradition; a tent representing Outdoor Ed; chickens celebrating the Farm; restaurants and businesses frequented by our students, non-profits we work with, and even a hidden “W” for Waverly.

Our first Elementary School Meeting of the year! Students learned a new song, heard announcements, celebrated friends with summer birthdays, and talked about the norms that help make ESM a meaningful gathering each week.

At Waverly, Learning Begins with Belonging. Elementary School Meeting is one of the ways our students learn what it means to be part of the Waverly community—to listen, participate, celebrate one another, and show up for each other. This weekly tradition helps our students find their place in the community and know that they are an important part of it.

On Saturday, our Waverly community came together at the Farm to kick off the new school year! Our students, families, faculty and staff braved the heat to reconnect with old friends, welcome new families, and celebrate the start of another year at Waverly.

Belonging helps students learn. Community builds connections.

Family potlucks and new student orientations are just some of the ways we welcome new and returning families to The Waverly School and create opportunities to connect, get to know one another, and build a sense of belonging.

We’re excited to continue building community at our Back-to-School Gathering tomorrow at 10 a.m. at the Waverly Farm. We can’t wait to see our Waverly families there!

Learning Courage is working with independent schools to prevent abuse of children and create safe schools in our world. Proud of this partnership and eager for future work.
