Friends Western School

Friends Western School Friends Western School is a community-based Quaker elementary school (K-6) in Pasadena, CA.

We believe in each child’s natural curiosity and compassion, and we work with each student to nurture a lifelong love of learning and a strong sense of integrity. Friends Western School is a K-5 Cooperative Quaker Elementary School inspired by the values Community, Harmony, Integrity, Equality, Simplicity, and the long Quaker tradition of Service and Stewardship. Small class sizes, art, music, science, sports and games, age-appropriate technology usage, field trips, mindfulness and nature studies are all integral to the Friends Western curriculum because our parents and teachers believe these things are intrinsic to the development of the whole person. FWS is a dynamic and diverse school community where teachers, and parents altogether are engaged learners taking a conscious role in each child's education, both socially and academically

New year, new ways to move, play, and explore!🌈✨

This year, we’ve added new sensory play equipment to campus, including a saucer swing and mini trampoline, to give our students more opportunities to move their bodies, build coordination, and explore different types of sensory input.

These movements help kids develop balance, body awareness, focus, and self-regulation, while also giving them a fun way to release energy and reset when they need it.

We’re also loving our new locally handcrafted picnic table for quiet moments and breaks when needed.

Earlier this month, our staff immersed in an inspiring professional development week centered around Creativity in the Classroom. ✨

Instead of traditional workshops, our staff explored museums, historic spaces, and cultural institutions throughout Los Angeles and Pasadena, gathering inspiration through hands-on experiences, meaningful conversations, and time together as a team.

From the Pasadena Gamble House to the Autry, California African American Museum, California Science Center, and The Broad Yoko Ono Exhibit, we explored storytelling, multiple perspectives, science, art, design, self-expression, and belonging.

At FWS, we believe our students deserve an education that is inclusive, engaging, curious, and a little out of the ordinary. We invest in our teachers so they can bring that same sense of wonder and creativity into the classroom.

We’re so excited to see where this inspiration takes us this year and beyond! 🌱✨
