Registration for Fall term at ArtCenter College of Design is now open! Taking a letterpress printing class at Archetype Press is a great way to learn typography in a hands-on environment. Take a break from your computer and get inky with us!
The posters in this image each went through the press four times: Twice for the background, an incredible linoleum carving by instructor Seth Drenner. Two more times to print the type in the foreground, handset in metal and wood type from our collection by instructor Christina Aumann. It looks like six colors/passes due to overlapping the colors and using split fountain printing techniques. Come learn how to make all this magic happen!
Our classes are open to all majors. Thursdays or Fridays 2-7pm: Archetype Press 1; Wednesdays 8am-1pm: TDS Text + Image.

Have fun and get your hands dirty! Experience Archetype Press’ collection of vintage wood type. Learn how to hand-set type and print on a Vandercook cylinder proof press. Explore the process of letterpress printing through composition, press lock-up, inking techniques, and more. Over the course of one weekend, design and print a limited edition poster with two or more colors. No previous experience necessary.
