Why is 99% of Africa’s data stored outside of Africa?
The Reality: As of this week, the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) released a sobering report at the Conference of Ministers in Morocco. Despite our rapid mobile pe*******on, Africa still hosts less than 1% of the world’s data centers. The Challenge: In the 2026 AI boom, data is the new gold. But if we do not own the "vaults" (the data centers) or the "refineries" (the AI processing power), we risk a new form of digital dependency. Currently, our data travels across oceans just to be processed, creating a "sovereignty gap" that impacts everything from national security to the cost of doing business.
The Vision:
The UNECA is calling for a radical shift: tapping into sovereign wealth funds and pension funds to build a homegrown AI infrastructure. Ghana has already taken a lead this month, approving a $250M National AI Computing Centre.
We are at a crossroads. We can either be consumers of global AI or the architects of an African-centered digital economy.
The Question for my network:
As we look toward 2030, should African nations prioritize "Digital Embassies" (cross-border data sharing) or focus on absolute local data residency? Is it time for a pan-African Cloud?

Stability or Succession? Cameroon Reintroduces the Vice Presidency.
The Core: Yesterday, Cameroon’s parliament passed a landmark constitutional amendment to re-establish the office of the Vice President. This is the most significant institutional shift the nation has seen in nearly two decades.
The Impact: Under the new law, the Vice President—appointed directly by the President—will now serve the remainder of a presidential term in the event of a vacancy. For high-level observers and investors, this move signals a push for administrative continuity and stability, though it has sparked intense debate regarding democratic succession versus executive appointment.
The Vision: As Central Africa navigates a period of regional leadership transitions, this structural change could redefine the political landscape of one of the continent's most pivotal economies.

Nigeria and Benin Forge a "United Front" Against Insecurity.
The Core: Today, military leaders from Nigeria and Benin formalized a strategic alliance to launch joint cross-border operations. This "Security Corridor" is designed to reclaim border territories that have seen an 86% rise in extremist activity over the past twelve months.
The Impact: Beyond the battlefield, this is an economic play. By securing the trade routes between these two ECOWAS powerhouses, the alliance aims to protect regional supply chains that are currently under siege by rising costs and transit risks.
The Vision: This partnership represents a shift toward "African-led solutions" for regional safety. It is a necessary step to ensure that the $266M in recent ECOWAS infrastructure grants can be deployed effectively to build the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and other vital trade links.
