Stayin’ alive in Mahjong! I’m breaking down “dead hands” - causes, how to declare them, and what happens to innocent Jokers caught in the crossfire. Here’s what you need to know to play smart and stay in the game.
☠️ A dead hand is one that can no longer be played. Once a head is called dead, that player is disqualified and sits out while the remaining players continue the game. The reasons a hand can be called dead fall into one of 3 main categories - procedural error, unwinnable hand, or Mahj declared in error. ☠️ How do you call your own hand dead? YOU DON’T! Only another player can do that. If you realize your hand is dead, keep it to yourself and try to pivot or switch to a defensive strategy.
☠️ How do you call another player’s hand dead? Politely point out the reason for the disqualification. Just remember, if the cause is an invalid exposure, the Jokers in that exposure are no longer available for exchange *after* you declare it. Complete any Joker exchanges you may need BEFORE you declare them out of the game. 🤓
