"How do I know which line to choose?" This is the most frequently asked questions I get from beginners and it makes sense - the card is overwhelming, but you have to choose one to play American Mah Jongg.
This step-by-step guide will teach you how to figure it out. 🏷️ Be sure to save this so you can come back to it later and scroll to the end for some tips on how to build your confidence.
🀄 Know the card - you don't have to memorize every line, but it's very helpful to know the nine sections of the National Mah Jongg League card. You'll choose a section first.
🀄 Look for anchors - organize your tiles after the deal and look for pairs, pungs, and kongs. All hands are built around them and this will give you a great starting point to "anchor" your hand.
🀄 Look for trends - what do your tiles have in common? Can you use the trends to support your anchors? If you don't have any anchors, this can help point you to a section.
🀄 The Charleston is an opportunity to curate your collection of tiles. Pass what doesn't fit with your anchors / trends and keep what does. Your hand will get stronger and you'll have a better idea about which lines make sense.

Remember to choose your section first and worry about a specific line later. It's very common to still be undecided halfway through the game. The more you play, the easier it will become!
