Thank you for your commitment to our children’s future. Your effort to understand each candidate reflects a mutual dedication to enhancing our educational system. Your attention to this crucial election means that, like me, you recognize the pivotal role education plays in shaping not only our children's futures but also the trajectory of our community and world.
Hello, I am Yvette Asusta-Lattof. My life, experiences, and daily endeavors are deeply intertwined with Paramus, where I have lived for 20 years. My husband Rich and I are not only residents but active participants in our children’s educational journey here: Gabriella, currently a sophomore at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and Theodore, a 7th-grader at West Brook Middle School.
My decision to run for the Board of Education is anchored in a passionate desire to advocate for all students and educators in our community. It's not just a political stance, but a personal mission, born from my experiences as a student, parent, community member, and professional in the educational field.
Education has been my compass, guiding me through life’s journey from the vibrant streets of Washington Heights, NY, where I was born to immigrant Cuban parents, to the community-centric neighborhoods of Paramus. Learning English in a public school as my second language, navigating through Bergenfield High School after moving to New Jersey in the 80s, and juggling full-time work while raising two children to earn my master’s from Steven Institute of Technology over seven years - every step was a testament to the transformative power of education and determination.
My marketing degree opened doors to the exhilarating world of Major League sports, where I was inspired by athletes and managers who, against all odds, dedicated themselves to excellence in their craft. The synergy between sports and education, both keys to unlocking potential and pathways in my hometown, resonated deeply with me, igniting a calling to facilitate similar opportunities for children everywhere.
This calling became a beacon seven years ago, leading me to pivot from consumer packaged goods and sports marketing to educational publishing at Scholastic Inc. Here, I’ve not only honed expertise in amplifying student engagement and achievement but also collaborated with DOEs/BOEs nationwide to forge inclusive learning environments for ALL children and their families. Ensuring children see themselves in literature, affirming their belonging and significance, and spearheading literacy initiatives to implement evidence-based practices for performance enhancement have been focal points of my work.
Even beyond my professional realm, my connection to education and student activities perseveres. Whether coaching cheer at various levels or leading a Scout troop in Paramus, my commitment to fostering growth, leadership, and success among our youth remains unwavering.
Two years ago, my life took a pause, and my perspective shifted as I battled and survived breast cancer. In the quiet moments of reflection amidst that struggle, I promised to channel my energy into creating positive, lasting change in the lives of those around me. My thoughts naturally gravitated towards education, a realm that has been my challenge and savior.
Now, I am turning that promise into action by running for a seat on the Paramus Board of Education. My journey through various facets of education, both personally and professionally, has equipped me with a unique and valuable perspective that I am eager to bring to our community’s educational leadership.
I am not just running for a position; I am committing to being a voice, an advocate, and a proactive member who brings tangible, positive change to our schools and students. Your vote is not merely a tally; it is a trust placed in me, a responsibility I do not take lightly.
If my mission resonates with you, if you believe in championing student success as much as I do, I kindly ask for your support. Please vote for Yvette Asusta-Lattof, Column 2, on November 7th. Together, let’s navigate towards a future where every student is seen, heard, and empowered to reach their fullest potential.
