Today we celebrate Juneteenth, or June nineteeth, the day on which slavery ended in the last Confederate hold out. The Emancipation Proclamation declared in 1863, individuals held as slaves in states in rebellion were free, however not until Federal troops arrived in these states was the law enforced. Take for example the potter Dave, whose work is shown here, who toiled as a slave in an Edgefield, South Carolina pottery. He wasn't released from bo***ge until 1864, when Union troops marched into town. Texas became the last resort for some slave owners who didn't want to give up their human property and Confederate forces in the state remained in rebellion for over a month after the Confederate government surrendered in April 1865. It took a declaration from the Union Army in Galveston on June 19, 1865 to end slavery there. As a result, it is this date that 3.9 million former slaves and their descendants have celebrated for generations.

The NSDAR Archives is excited to share their new online exhibition for Women of Resilience: DAR Service in World War I: http://womenofresilience.dar.org/.
