It was nice to help a new student yesterday. Student is doing Algebra 2 at school. We worked out problems dealing with complex numbers, polynomial inequalities and radicals simplification. Sometimes it is just a small push that is needed in order to score better.

A new Nation's Report Card shows drops in science, math and reading scores It's the first Nation's Report Card since the Trump administration began making cuts to the U.S. Education Department. The scores reflect the state of student achievement in early 2024.

Classes have started and most kids are getting into the rigor of middle and high school subjects. Parents and caregivers please do take a moment to see how the child is doing academically. Any problems or issues with concepts and or test grades, should be addressed earlier than later.

Just finished a geometry class for a middle schooler who is preparing for an upcoming test at school. Every quiz, every grade and every test matters in order to come out with good grades at the end of each school year.

Some kids just need that extra push to understand concepts better. Same goes with SAT testing. Please don’t wait till 12th grade starts to look for improvements in test scores. Would be ideal if the student gets a good SAT score by spring of junior year.

Just my 2 cents worth of advice from prior experience with dealing with kids and grades and college admissions.

Good luck on the upcoming SAT!

Wanted to wish all students good luck as they sit for the upcoming SAT exam. A few points and words of wisdom to help students!

1 Keep all required IDs and pens and pencils and calculators and a snack handy the previous day itself.

2 Get a good night’s rest. Cramming late into the night should be avoided.

3 Have a good breakfast and leave on time. If possible have another person drop you at the test location. Removes the hassle of the student driving on test day!

4 Try to remove the obvious incorrect choices for the Math problems. You need to then only focus on the 2 remaining possible answers if you have eliminated 2 choices.

5 Different strategies can be employed in arriving at the correct answer - plug an answer choice and check, take a number that would satisfy the conditions in the problem and test with that number, solve the problem algebraically and so on.

6 Don’t get stuck on any one problem. If something looks difficult, skip that question and move on to the ones you know how to do. This is important strategy for time management.

7 After all the knowledge you have acquired, simple mind management techniques on test day would determine the final outcome! Don’t get tensed or frustrated as you take the test. Calmly move on to the next problem or question.

Wanted to wish good luck to students as they start a new academic year.

As you learn new things in Math and other subjects, learn to balance school and outside school life! Stay focussed, listen to your teachers, parents or caregivers and study well to get good grades.

Remember there is a whole support system available to ensure each one of you succeed! Remember to ask for help when needed. Ask for timely help also.

Honors PreCalc or AP PreCalc ?

The HS PreCalc is now being offered as an AP PreCalc in addition to the Honors PreCalc. Today had a talk with a Mom who was thinking that AP PreCalc would be tough for her kid to handle in the upcoming school year.

The fact of the matter is till a few years back the subject was offered only as Honors and my kids did it that way. So looking at content matter I don’t see difference between the 2 levels - it is just the additional AP exam to be taken instead. Getting a 4 or a 5 in the AP exam means credits can be transferred on to the college transcript. About 70 to 75 percent is needed to get a score of 5!

So if you have a child debating on which course to take, I would suggest AP version!

After applying the PreCalc formula the problems come down to Algebra 1 simplification mostly - this is something many kids struggle with unfortunately.

So practice, practice and more practice is needed to consistently score high in Math and just having a good teacher at school or a good tutor at home is not sufficient. The student needs to work out at home in order to score high.

Yesterday was happy to hear from my Algebra 2 student who came to me in Feb 2025 scoring around 68 to 70 percent! His score in the final exam yesterday was a 93 percent! So some push by tutor and some focussed work by the student definitely helps!
