Everyone: At President Eddie Campbell's urging, KDE, the Lt. Governor and a representative from the state Department of Health will appear together in a town hall Thursday, July 23, beginning at 2:00 p.m. eastern. The purpose of this event is to allow educators to ask questions and voice concerns about school reopening. The details below will be available on KEA’s social media and website tomorrow. Please note the 2:00 p.m. start time is subject to change. Please advertise this event widely to your local leaders and members.

KEA put out a statement supporting the KDE guidance on reopening shortly after it was released. Based on what we are hearing from members statewide, some districts are including educators in the planning process, and some aren’t. Some districts are implementing all the safety practices in the KDE guidance, and some aren’t. Some districts have already committed to a distance learning reopening for all students, and we believe more districts will follow that lead very soon.

The coronavirus situation in Kentucky is not improving, and each district’s reopening plans must take current and future conditions into account. Concerned members in each district should identify the group(s) that are making reopening plans, including district committees and site-based councils. Ultimately, each local board of education will have to approve the reopening plan for each district. All reopening plans should be compared to the safety expectations and best practices in the KDE guidance. Local health conditions should be considered. Wherever those plans fall short or are not based in facts and science, members, with the support of their local affiliate leadership and UD, should focus their advocacy efforts on the decisionmakers within the district or worksite to make necessary changes.

The 2020 Kentucky General Assembly begins work for this year's session tomorrow. KEA President, Lee Edward Campbell, has given members several ways in which to stay abreast of the goings on in Frankfort.

*You may sign up for Legislative Action Text Alerts by sending a text to 67076 and in the message line type "KEA Action Alert."

*Sign up for your KEA District's Day of Learning. Contact our office at 606-886-6367 or email Sherry Castle at [email protected] for more details. You will travel to Frankfort, attend education committee meetings and meet with your legislators.

*Choose a day for your local to wear RED4ED from now until the end of the legislative session in April. Take pictures and post on social media, especially here on our EKEA Facebook.

*Be sure to use and in all your social media posts

*Save the Legislative Hotline number in your phone so you will have anytime access to call to support or oppose education legislation. It is 800-372-7181.

*Meet with your Representative and Senator on a regular basis, especially when they are back home during the session. Visit the LRC website at https://legislature.ky.gov to learn who your representatives are and to follow bills that are filed. There you will also find their email addresses and phone numbers.

JCEA will be hosting our retiree/new teacher dinner on Tuesday, November 19th at Ramada Inn in Paintsville. Registration begins at 5:30 and dinner at 6. JCEA members and new teachers are free. Also retirees and their family and friends are free. Please let me know if you’ll be attending.
