The Modern Quilt Guild Our mission is to support and encourage the growth and development of modern quilting through art, education, and community.

The Modern Quilt Guild is made up of over 150 guilds across the country and world. The MQG developed out of the thriving online community of modern quilters and their desire to start meeting in person. The founding guild was formed in Los Angeles in October of 2009. Eliu Hernandez shared his expertise in working with denim in last month’s on-demand video and now you can put those new skills to use - and that stack of jeans you have been saving! - in the pattern he designed called Pocket Shadow. The pocket shadow is a term Eliu uses to describe the unfaded denim under the back pocket of a pair of jeans. This pattern uses an improv-ish style construction method with additional instructions to add appliqué for a more advanced quilt project.

When assigned to choose her spotlight quilts, our Director of Events, Elizabeth Dackson, did a little sewing-room survey and a deep dive in our photo archives!

"I’ve been cleaning up my sewing room and stash lately and I’ve learned that I seem to have an issue with red! I have very few reds in my stash, most especially in my solids stash, so I took a look for quilts that feature red heavily from over the years!"

Selections from QuiltCon 2026 will make its last stop outside the U.S. this week at Carrefour in northeastern France! The exhibit continues to spread the innovative joy of modern quilting with audiences around the world. If you are attending Carrefour, please stop in at Salle Polyvalente in Lièpvre.

Our friend Kelly Spell, who has a quilt in our exhibit, will also have her own exhibit at the show, too!

Color! Color is emotion, memory, experience. When we saw Karen's quilt picks all together, COLOR is what stood out most. Look at these beauties. 😍

Moon Pie Mood Ring by Laura Henneberry from 2024. Karen says, "The repeating appliquéd moons here feel lighthearted and whimsical, and the color distribution is so pleasing to the eye."

Bloomin' Lot by Tara Glastonbury from 2026. Karen says, "To me, this quilt looks like an overhead view of a garden and I enjoy the bright, happy colors."

Risograph Rings by Colleen Kesterson from 2025. Karen says, "Her color choices are unique and the use of different values to create the illusion of transparency is interesting."

Dragon Continuum by Jackie Pang from 2026. Karen says, "I love the fact that at first glance, you don't necessarily see the dragon because of all the shapes but then you look again, and you see something completely new."

The MQG is so pleased to share an exhibit of Kawaii Quilts from Japan at QuiltCon 2027 in Atlanta. These 20 quilts and 3 dollhouse boxes are teeming with exquisite technical stitching, thoughtful touches, and clever details. Make sure to set aside time to see this exhibit in Building 2, Floor 2. For even more depth, join Naomi Ichikawa and Teresa Duryea Wong at their lecture "LE01 Kawaii Appliqué Quilts from Japan" on Thursday morning.

And don't forget, QuiltCon registration opens Wednesday, August 19 at 10 a.m. Eastern for MQG members!
