Today I had the privilege of representing the Texas Beekeepers Association as we honored Gregg County Extension Agent Shaniqua Davis with the Outstanding Contribution to Texas Beekeeping Award at the Texas County Agricultural Agents Association District 7 Conference. Extension agents play a vital role in strengthening agriculture across Texas, and we are grateful for Shaniqua’s dedication to educating and serving our beekeeping community. It was also a pleasure to share this moment with Dr. Rick Avery, Director of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, and TCAAA President Wes Utley. - JImmy Middlebrooks

🌡️ Texas Heat Alert for Beekeepers 🐝

The extreme temperatures we're experiencing across Texas don't just affect us—they affect our honey bees too.

This photo was taken after 7:00 PM, yet thousands of bees are still outside the hive. This behavior, known as bearding, is a normal response to high temperatures that helps cool the colony and maintain the brood nest at the proper temperature.

As the heat continues, make sure your colonies have plenty of water, good ventilation, and avoid unnecessary inspections during the hottest part of the day. Stay safe, and help your bees do the same!

Join our three-part Honey Evaluation Course to explore honey through laboratory analysis, sensory evaluation, and honey judging principles. Participants will submit two honey samples for comprehensive laboratory testing and receive a personalized report while learning how to evaluate honey quality, flavor, aroma, and common defects.

Whether you're a beekeeper, honey producer, or simply interested in learning more about honey, this course offers a unique opportunity to better understand one of nature's most fascinating foods.
