How A Guiding Hand came to be......

As a Speech-Language Pathologist with over 35 years experience, I have been fortunate to acquire a unique skill set as a direct service provider in schools for children with autism and behavior management needs, a faculty member and clinical supervisor at Nazareth University in NY and through collaboration with an early intervention multidisciplinary team assisting families with children exhibiting communication delays. Though there is no greater joy than helping a child learn to communicate, a consideration of equal importance is often overlooked: parent coaching!

Children diagnosed with autism or other related delays most often receive direct service for speech or occupational therapy in the schools or clinics. But what happens when parents are presented with significant challenges or behaviors at home or in social settings such as restaurants, parties or vacation destinations? Several experience frustration, are overwhelmed or feel helpless when facing these situations or attempting to implement strategies offered by therapists.

Parents need help!! A Guiding Hand is an individualized support service I provide for parents at home or in community based events/locations. My parent coaching addresses ways to modify environments, manage behaviors resulting from frustration, and strategies to ease communication challenges. I also collaborate with direct service providers to help implement strategies or resources recommended during the therapy process.
