Today, OCPS honors Juneteenth and commemorates the historic day—June 19, 1865—when the news of liberation finally reached the last enslaved African Americans in Texas, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Today, we recognize Juneteenth as the oldest national commemoration of the ending of slavery.
