When people think about Japan, they usually imagine neon cities, temples, and cherry blossoms. But far to the south lies Okinawa, a subtropical island chain surrounded by some of the clearest waters in Asia. For divers, Okinawa offers vibrant coral reefs, fascinating marine life, and underwater landscapes that rival many famous tropical destinations.

Clownfish may be small, but they are fierce defenders of their sea anemone. Living safely among the anemone’s stinging tentacles thanks to a protective mucus on their skin, clownfish gain shelter from predators.
In return, they protect their host with surprising aggression. When another fish approaches the anemone, the clownfish often rushes forward to chase or bite the intruder, even if the visitor is much larger.
This behavior protects the clownfish’s home, breeding site, and partner. Their constant movement also helps keep the anemone clean and well-oxygenated.
The result is one of the reef’s most fascinating partnerships: a tiny fish acting as the bodyguard of its own living fortress. 🪸🐠

This aerial footage documents a calm surface interval of large whales, likely during a resting or social phase. Such behavior allows for efficient gas exchange while minimizing energy expenditure between dive cycles.
Observations like these provide valuable visual data on movement patterns, spacing, and body condition in free-ranging cetaceans. Drone-based monitoring continues to be an increasingly important non-invasive tool for marine mammal research and conservation.

Fish feeding on jellies might sound unusual at first. After all, jellyfish are mostly water and armed with stinging cells. Yet in oceans around the world, this predator–prey interaction is surprisingly common.

Jellyfish, often called “jellies,” are gelatinous zooplankton composed of up to 95% water. Nutritionally, they are less energy-dense than many other prey, but they are abundant in many marine ecosystems. When jelly populations bloom, they become an easy, slow-moving food source for opportunistic feeders.

For some fish, jellies are a supplemental snack. For others, they are a regular part of the diet.
