This means, they have sought out additional education in this speciality and have the skills to execute:

✅ The protocol for doing a complete evaluation of all types of tethered oral tissues.

Did you know that your Lactation Consultant can tell a lot about the way your baby is latching, just by looking at their lips while resting?!

Lip blisters give us a clue that your baby is using their lips to “hold onto” the breast (or bottle!) rather than allowing the back of the tongue to create the seal for a solid latch.

This baby may have been latching too shallow (just the tip of the ni**le), was too low or too far forward in mama’s arms, OR their tongue was having trouble extending past the lower in gum line to cup/lift and draw milk out appropriately.

If your baby’s lips look like this, it’s time for a feeding consult! We can meet in-person or virtually worldwide 🌎

In our visit we will:

1️⃣ Check the latch, fix it
2️⃣ Check the position, fix it
3️⃣ Check tongue function with feeding
4️⃣ Check for signs of milk transfer (is baby getting enough?)
5️⃣ Care for your ni**les
6️⃣ Pumping, fl**ge size, supplementation if needed

This message is from a mama who has experienced multiple bouts of recurrent mastitis and was about ready to give up!

Gone are the days where we promote heat, aggressive massaging, epsom salt soaks and over pumping/nursing for mastitis and clogged ducts. 🤯

We now know (thanks to current research and Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Protocol #36) - mastitis is an inflammatory process. Not often requiring the use of antibiotics because it is inflammatory in nature, not bacterial.

The aim is to CALM THE INFLAMMATORY PROCESS, address the milk removal process, and symptoms will resolve.

1. Speak to your pediatrician
2. If breastfeeding (even pumping!): schedule a visit with a oral motor/airway savvy IBCLC (🙋🏻‍♀️) for an assessment and plan of action.
3. If not breast feeding, you can seek out an oral motor evaluation from a pediatric occupational therapist or speech language pathologist.
