πŸ”₯πŸš™ Last month, Ontario firefighters extinguished a vehicle fire along the shoulder of the I-10 Freeway, east of the Fourth Street offramp.

With traffic continuing to move alongside the incident, the response also highlights the added hazards firefighters face while working along busy roadways.

When approaching emergency activity on the freeway, slow down, stay alert and create as much space as safely possible for crews working roadside. A little awareness behind the wheel can make a meaningful difference for those working just beyond the traffic lane.

β€οΈπŸ•ŠοΈ On August 27, Local 1430 remembers Fire Engineer Curtis Gold on the fourth anniversary of his passing.

Curtis joined the Ontario Fire Department in 2016 as part of a close-knit academy class united by the motto, β€œ10 in, 10 out.” He became a respected Fire Engineer, paramedic and member of the Urban Search and Rescue team, but those who knew him remember most his humor, friendship and dedication to others.

Curtis remains deeply missed by his family, friends and fellow firefighters. His stories continue to be shared, and his legacy remains part of Local 1430.

We love you, Curtis.

πŸš’ Effective hoseline operations depend on more than the firefighter at the nozzle. They rely on communication, coordination and every member of the crew working together.

During hands-on training, Ontario firefighters reinforced those fundamentals while working through live-flow hoseline operations as a team. Training together builds the consistency and coordination crews depend on when conditions demand it.

Beginning Oct. 1, CONFIRE EMS will begin providing and coordinating ambulance services across participating communities, including Ontario, with Priority Ambulance supporting the majority of ambulance transportation needs.

What doesn’t change: Ontario firefighters will continue responding to medical emergencies as part of the 911 system. Residents should also continue calling 911 exactly as they do today.

The transition is designed to more closely coordinate fire, dispatch and ambulance resources behind the scenes while maintaining uninterrupted emergency medical service for the community.

Ontario firefighters recently responded to a fire at a boarded-up, single-story home, where crews arrived to find smoke coming from the structure and a fire burning inside.

Despite limited access around the home, firefighters quickly brought the fire under control while searching the residence to make sure no one was inside.

Thankfully, no injuries were reported, and crews rescued a kitten from the home. πŸ±πŸš’

πŸš’ πŸ’¦ πŸ§‘β€πŸš’ Last week, Local 1430 members participated in classroom instruction and hands-on live-flow training with the Ontario Fire Department’s new nozzle equipment.

The training gave members an opportunity to become familiar with the equipment’s operating characteristics, including stream-pattern control, hoseline back pressure and nozzle reaction, while reinforcing safe and effective hoseline techniques.

We thank the Ontario Fire Department and the City of Ontario for continuing to invest in the equipment and training our members need to perform safely, effectively and with confidence.

β˜€οΈπŸ‘¨β€πŸš’ Triple-digit temperatures are expected across Ontario and surrounding communities throughout the weekend.

To our Local 1430 members: prolonged incidents, heavy exertion and extreme heat can quickly increase the risk of heat-related illness. Start the shift well hydrated, make full use of incident rehab and cooling periods, and keep looking out for one another throughout the day. Speaking up when something feels off protects both the firefighter and the entire crew.

We encourage the community to prepare as well. Limit strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat, drink water regularly, check on older adults and others who may be especially vulnerable, and never leave children or pets inside a parked vehicle.
