Remember our stroll up the Canal Saint Martin? This is a still from the 1938 Marcel Carné film "Hôtel du Nord." Filmed just before the outbreak of WWII, it is an unforgettable visit to prewar Paris, and a neighborhood you will recognize.

D-Day meant different things to different people. Our Paris hotel was used by the Wehrmacht (Hitler's army) during the occupation (1940-1944). On this day 75 years ago, the German soldiers in our rooms awoke to big news. No doubt some of them would never see Germany again. The Germans installed a new heating system in the hotel during the occupation. The brass grates in the floors go unnoticed by most, but if you look closely you'll see an unmistakable symbol. Yesterday the director gave me a tour of the basement. It was used as an air raid shelter during the occupation. The arrows painted on the walls and the "Emergency exit" sign are still there. D-Day history is alive, even in this modest hotel.

For students of previous years (dating back to 1998), our home in the 3rd Arrondissement (Hôtel Bellevue et du Chariot d'Or) hasn't changed much. It is as warm and welcoming as always ❤️

A few views of the new Les Halles, near our hotel. I didn't care for it at first, but after a stroll around the grounds one can see that it is integrated well with the surrounding area. The roof panels resemble airfoils. Rainwater is channeled in interesting ways. From the back, the colorful rooftop of the Centre Pompidou is visible. The sweeping lines frame the elegant Église Saint-Eustache quite nicely. (Louis XIV was baptized in that church, one of my favorites in Paris.)

CU@Paris 2019 enters week 3! Slow internet at hotel makes it a challenge to add photos, but I'll try to add a few each day. Here: arrival day dinner, a few students hadn't yet arrived. We call it "the day of the walking dead," keep them walking and acclimate them to the new time zone. Everyone arrived safely, off to a good start!

Gearing up for CU@Paris 2019! 15 students this year. Sadly, they will not be able to tour the Cathedral of Notre Dame, as Creighton Students have been doing every year. We will visit the site, and a 2017 student who took many photos and video of the interior has prepared a presentation for us.

The flood of 2018 has crested and the waters of the Seine are finally beginning to recede. Our 2016 group saw even higher floodwaters in Paris. We were unable to visit the Louvre, and our group was the last one out of the Orsay museum as they closed to prepare for high water. We were unable to go for our annual bateau mouche cruise, boats could not go under the bridges.

Each year our Creighton FLPA group takes a day trip by train to the Normandy coast. Students explore Deauville and Trouville, divided by the Touques River. We enjoy the fresh sea air, fresh seafood, and some beach time if weather permits! Why are Deauville and Trouville a part of our CU@Paris program? These resort towns on the coast are sometimes called "the 21st Arrondissement" (Paris has 20 arrondissements) because so many Parisians vacation there! This brief video was filmed in 2016. Some of the students were invited up to the flying bridge for a great view as we returned to port!
