I want to share a story—about my own daughter.
She was an eighth grader, trying to follow in her older sister’s footsteps—earning a spot on our Worlds Level 6 team. The top. The standard. The goal.
And I’m her dad… but I’m also an owner and a coach at that level. That’s not an easy place to sit. That year, I wanted to put her on Stars. Of course I did. Every time she hit something big—something clean, something impressive—I felt that pull.
But wanting it doesn’t make it right. She wasn’t consistent. She wasn’t ready. And I knew it. Several of her former teammates got pulled up that year. She didn’t. She was upset—she’d tell you she was devastated. I won’t go that far. Not for this. She hasn’t lived enough life yet to know what real hardship is. But in that moment, it felt real to her—and that’s what mattered. And yeah… it hit me too. I was frustrated. I was angry. But I wasn’t confused. We were doing the right thing. She needed more reps. She needed more time. And more than anything—she needed to learn how to handle not getting what she wanted. But you know what else she needed? She needed me. She needed me to be there - not to justify her feelings, but to continue to be the positive guide for her. To help her get past the negativity as quickly as possible and get to the part that makes her better. To reinforce her grit and her passion. That’s the part nobody talks about.
Looking back, that moment didn’t break her—it built her.
But not overnight. She had to reset. She had to refocus. She had to humble herself enough to look in the mirror and be honest about where she was falling short. No excuses. No blaming. Just work. That’s where the shift happened. That’s what turned her into the most accomplished flyer we’ve ever had at Elite. Not talent. Not opportunity. ACCOUNTABILITY.
I’ve had to do the same thing with my other kids too.
From my oldest being taken out of the air and told to base… to my youngest not making a team with friends and being held back to grow. No shortcuts. No exceptions. That’s my job as a dad.
Not to protect them from reality—but to prepare them for it. Because the truth is—this isn’t just about cheer.
Most athletes don’t have a straight path. The best ones usually don’t. They get passed over. They get held back. They get told “not yet.” And the ones who make it? They don’t quit. They don’t sulk. They don’t look for excuses. They go to work.
I’ve built a career watching athletes go through this. The ones who lean into it—who own it—come out different. Not just better athletes, but tougher, more disciplined, more aware of what it actually takes. That’s what this is about. Not comfort. Not feelings. Not instant results. Growth.
I hope this story can inspire others.
Because staying the course—especially when it’s hard—is the only real way to succeed.
And the only way through it… is through it.

For 31 years, Elite Cheer has built teams based on experience, progression, accountability, and what is best for the TEAM. Tryout season is emotional for athletes and parents alike, and we understand that completely.
As we finish our Level 6 Worlds tryouts, we want to remind families of a few things:
Character matters.
Integrity matters.
Loyalty matters.
Resilience matters.
Building elite-level teams involves far more than a single skill or isolated moment. Team placements are based on countless factors families may not always fully see behind the scenes — technique consistency, coachability, athlete chemistry, mental toughness, work ethic, reliability, and long-term development.
As parents, it is natural to believe in your athlete — and you should. But so do our coaches. Sometimes tryout season can unintentionally shift focus toward comparison instead of personal growth. The healthiest approach is to focus on your athlete’s journey, development, and response to challenges.
One thing that has always separated Elite Cheer is our belief in family. We believe life is bigger than cheerleading, and the strongest teams are built through trust, relationships, sacrifice, and supporting one another through both success and adversity.
We also believe strongly in trusting the process — not simply chasing a level. Growth is not always linear, and adversity often creates the strongest athletes.
After 31 years, we still believe experience matters. Standards matter. Family matters.
We are grateful for the families who continue to trust the process and believe in what Elite Cheer stands for. And for anyone wavering during emotional moments of tryout season, we encourage you to trust us and trust that every decision is being made with the long-term growth and success of your athlete in mind.
