Former state senator remembered for dogged advocacy of rural Nebraska • Nebraska Examiner 09/25/2025

It is with heavy heart that we share the news of the passing of beloved former Nebraska State Senator, Loran Schmit, last week.

Senator Ernie Chambers and Senator Loran Schmit worked closely together during their time in Nebraska legislation and shared a goal to work for the betterment of Nebraska's citizens and not for larger corporations.

Senator Ernie Chambers and the Chambers' Family send their condolences to the Schmit Family and would like to share a poem written by Gayla Lee Chambers, from Ernie Chambers :

Never Be Forgotten
Poem by Gayla Lee Chambers

A fine person, A hard working person, A great person, A public servant.

The remembrance of greatness shall live on and will never be forgotten.

Sharing moments, sharing disagreements, sharing conversations, sharing success.

The remembrance of greatness shall live on and will never be forgotten.

We will never forget you, our old friend.

Your work lives on!

From Senator Ernie Chambers

We are excited to share that the University of Nebraska at Omaha Tell All the Truth Project will be hosting an author visit event on Monday April 7th between 7:30pm-8:45pm with Camille Dungy author of Soil, Black Nature, and much more!

Dungy brings a powerful voice to the literature and history of environmental justice—particularly as it relates to race in the US. She is an internationally renowned author and scholar. We are extremely fortunate to be able to bring her to campus.

This event would make a great opportunity for courses in any/all of the following areas (and probably others as well!):

Environmental Studies
Black Studies
Women’s and Gender Studies
English
Creative Writing
History
Anthropology/Sociology
Human Rights/ Social Justice Studies

We hope you’ll join us for this exciting free author visit scheduled for this coming Monday, April 7th and to register just follow the link below :
