On my first visit to Yellowstone in October 2001 I came across a bison in an unexpected early snowfall. I wasn’t prepared for how quickly winter arrived, and that sense of surprise is part of this image. The bison’s thick coat dusted with snow, the steady gaze, and the quiet landscape felt like a small, sure moment of resilience. Two bald eagles meet midair over a muted shoreline, talons locked in a sudden, fierce exchange. At Seabeck, Washington, eagles and herons gather from mid-May through mid-June, and I had been waiting for a moment like this for years. The contrast of white crowns against dark bodies and the precise motion made it worth the wait. This is a little parade from St. Andrews Bay on South Georgia Island. I call it Penguin Walk because the lineup felt like a penguin version of Abbey Road. There’s a calm, steady rhythm to their march, the pale horizon and weathered pebbles keeping everything quiet while the orange at their throats adds a small, warm punctuation. If that quiet order speaks to you, take a closer look: https://store.rosalindphilipsphotography.com/merchandise-warehouse/art_print_products/penguinwalk4mug

Here’s Pair Bond: two King Penguins at St. Andrews Bay meeting in a brief, deliberate touch. King Penguins mate for life unless a mate does not show up on time, and a mated pair greets each other by intertwining their necks, much like a quick kiss. I kept the scene simple, focusing on that quiet exchange against the pebble shore. I stopped at Tern Lake one afternoon to watch Arctic Terns and noticed the rippled reflections, so I went back at dawn hoping for still water. The mountains and a band of evergreens settled into a calm, near-perfect reflection, with a small reed-covered islet in the foreground to give the scene some scale. It was quiet in a way that felt real, not staged. See it here: https://store.rosalindphilipsphotography.com/warehouse-open-edition-prints/art_print_products/finalternlake-1

I came across this along the Dosewallips Road in Olympic National Park, a stretch I like for fall and winter drives and the chance of spotting elk. Narrow ribbons of water thread between dark stones while crisp brown leaves collect in crevices, creating a steady contrast of motion and calm. I return to scenes like this for their quiet energy. I wanted to share this image from Rialto Beach on Washington’s wild north coast, where the shoreline is shrouded in fog and waves keep rolling in. The motion feels both forceful and calm, with layered swells and foamy edges that pull your eye along the coast. To me it speaks to the spirit of Juneteenth, the joys and hardships of a long march toward freedom. The title, The Rolling Sea, takes its words from Lift Every Voice and Sing. At Johnston Ridge I heard the soft whirr of wings, turned, and there she was waiting while I took her portrait. Barely three inches long, she sat on a slender, weathered twig with an attentive, compact presence, a flash of green on the crown and two small orange flecks on the breast. I kept that quiet moment, and you can see it here: https://store.rosalindphilipsphotography.com/warehouse-open-edition-prints/art_print_products/rufoushummer
