Outdoor Education program based in Mount Vernon WA. Imagine the satisfaction of becoming aware and knowledgable about nature.

You could tell what season it is just by the smell in the air; be able to identify almost every native plant in the local forests, and tell which are medicinal or poisonous. What would it be like to know where you are only by the different sounds of the stream? Imagine being able to tell what animals have been around by their tracks, and what animals might be present by listening to the bird calls

Teaching interns will have opportunities to develop their instructional skills, practice lesson and curriculum planning, and gain experience in the field of environmental education and multiage teaching. Interns will be included in a weekly planning and training session, as well as at least one of our weekly programs. Interns can be a part of a learning community in which the following disciplines and methods are employed: anti-oppression framework, non-violent communication, multiage-community based education, 8 shields mentoring techniques, and much more! Interns will be given priority for hiring of our summer and fall programs. This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to start a career in education.

• Show enthusiasm and a hard-working attitude while at programs. Engage warmly in professional communications with students and parents.

Internship Requirements: (Summer)

Evergreen Students:
We can offer a few things to Evergreen students. In addition to serving as field supervisors for internship or independent learning contracts, we can offer book recommendations, and suggest professional development assignments to supplement your internship learning.

Reflections From a Former Intern:
“At ECOS, I am blessed with the wonderful opportunity to actively engage in a multi-age, community based, nature immersion experience at Burfoot Park. As a volunteer, I participate as a model for the children by assisting and taking part in creative play, scientific/nature inquiry, singing, art projects, and integrative learning activities. I am able to learn and observe the incredibly inclusive group dynamics that occur in a [largely] children-led atmosphere. It has been great to be in an environment where it's possible to integrate nature, art, and mindfulness successfully into childhood education! In the time I've spent with Brooke and with ECOS, I have had such a beautiful experience laughing and learning to the tune of the bird songs.”
