I remember by Great Aunt Paloma's toes. She had been in care at my Great-Grandmother's nursing home. I remember reaching towards her toes, exposed from the white cloth over the stretcher as the funeral home took her away to be embalmed. I remember being very upset that I didn't get a chance to hear her stories of Old New Mexico. Today, whenever I see Old West lace up shoes I still wonder what stories she could have taught me.
We are all destined to encounter death at some point in our lives, some earlier than others. Sometimes you must face the death of a beloved pet or a grandparent, or you see a news story that has you confront death head on.
