Death Cafe is an open forum group that meets once a month to eat cupcakes and talk about death and death related topics because unfortunately, that kind of talk isn't always well received. Topics range from personal stories and grief to death rituals to aging to...have a good joke? It is also okay to just come and listen if you aren't ready to talk yet. Death Cafe Olympia is also inclusive, which

means everyone is welcome. Death Cafe members are only required to treat each other with care and respect during the conversations that occur. This group meets every last Wednesday of the month at 6:30-8pm at Burial Grounds Cafe on 5th Avenue across from the Capitol Theater.

I remember by Great Aunt Paloma's toes. She had been in care at my Great-Grandmother's nursing home. I remember reaching towards her toes, exposed from the white cloth over the stretcher as the funeral home took her away to be embalmed. I remember being very upset that I didn't get a chance to hear her stories of Old New Mexico. Today, whenever I see Old West lace up shoes I still wonder what stories she could have taught me.

We are all destined to encounter death at some point in our lives, some earlier than others. Sometimes you must face the death of a beloved pet or a grandparent, or you see a news story that has you confront death head on.
