“Thunder Cake” by Patricia Polacco was our main story for EMW PreK and Kindergarten during our first block. This story holds beautiful avenues to build self-confidence and bravery even when we might feel scared. For a lot of our youngest students this was their first time being dropped off for a program without parents. Each week, we layered our story in gently with games, art projects, and songs related to counting, weather, and what to do when we feel nervous. This story culminated with a delightful treat of tea and thunder cake at snack time during last class. This beloved storyline and the gorgeous illustrations give children an opportunity to reframe the things that might feel hard to do. We are proud of our little ones! Every student was able to drop into class successfully by the end of block. Isn’t it something to witness growth on our children’s own timeline without the stress of outside comparison? EMW allows for space and time to support each student individually and we are blessed to have a program that has that flexibility.

🍁We had such a delight celebrating the autumn equinox with our classes last Sunday! We dyed silks, participated in feats of strength, searched for dragons, and shared stories and a meal.

✨Our next school-wide celebration is Lantern Walk on November 15; mark your calendars!

✅ First week of school is in the books!

🌼 What an overwhelming joy and privilege to have these rooms filled with sweet young souls! We set new rhythms, made new friends, asked big questions and investigated answers, started projects, and began to settle into our new year together.

📖 Have you officially started your homeschooling year yet? Remember: start slowly, layering in subjects a few at a time. You don’t have to do everything every day, or even every season! Give yourself grace, follow your children’s lead, and look for the ordinary magic during your days.

🌈 Oh my goodness. We had the most beautiful Rainbow Ceremony with some of our families today! This Waldorf celebration signifies the beginning of a new school year and honors our seven-year old students who are entering into more formal learning. We shared our light with one another and set the intention to be a light in our community through the upcoming year. Our older students shared their gratitude for the previous year and hopes for the upcoming year, and our littlest learners received a token of the seeds planted in them as they await their own Rainbow Ceremony.

🌾As we continue to celebrate the rhythms of the seasons this year, we hope for all of our families to be able to join us.

🍎Each class, our PreK students share a family-style meal around our table. They help prepare, serve, and clean up their space, and learn where their food comes from. They come to learn the rhythm of the snack schedule and look forward to foods you might not think they’d eat!

So many excited things on the horizon for Enchanted Mountain Waldorf!

✏️Next Monday, August 31, is our first day of school! We are looking so forward to having all four classes in our learning space for the first time and getting started on a new year of adventure and growth.

⭐️Saturday, September 12 is our first Parent/Toddler class of the new school year; we currently have three classes scheduled for the fall semester. This is such a special time to set aside and learn about implementing the Waldorf philosophy in your homes and an early age. 🖍️ Oh my goodness, it was wonderful meeting so many of you at Open House yesterday! We were delighted to put names to new faces and see some of our returning friends, and are so excited to kick off the new school year in just two weeks!

📝 For those of you who didn’t make it to Open House, please be looking for an email from us THIS WEEK. We still have just a little more information to communicate before the beginning of the school year, including some important invitations and permission slips that have required dates attached.

🌼 P.S. We adopted these gardens in the spring in conjunction with .mountain.wellspring and they are looking so beautiful late in the summer! If you haven’t seen them in person, be sure to swing by the school and check them out.

In honor of her 250th birthday, we remember the truths that America proclaims- “from her beacon hand glows world-wide welcome.” Unpacking the symbols and ideas in this poem with the kids was such a beautiful experience 🇺🇸

(The giggling at the end is because I was helping with motions and I messed up 😅)

🌼For our last block of the school year, we paired our study of Shakespeare with a study of poetry; our last poem form was found poetry. Each student received a copy of a different verse we memorized this year and they spent a quiet few moments choosing the words that most spoke to them. They switched verses with a classmate, who then wrote all the chosen words on index cards. I shuffled all the cards together and passed them out, and then the class worked together to compose their class poems.

🌱I would be lying if I said that these didn’t make me emotional. So different, but so much truth and beauty in each, and all from the same source material. What a beautiful metaphor for our world, indeed.
