Hello Student 2 Student friends. I realize this is all a mystery, so thank you for the trust. I am Professor Stephen Morrow, and I am part of a team to start a new mentoring program on the campus of Oklahoma City Community College. The program has one goal: to move the needle on student class success and graduation rates. It is a goal that reverberates deeply in my heart and deeply with my experiences as a teacher of twenty plus years.
So here goes, with your help.
I will use the metaphor of the cairn-the precariously stacked stones-for the early part of our conversation and idea gathering. The image is meant to represent the mentee, whose college success or failure can hinge on a flat tire or broken water pump-any small bump. The image is also meant to represent us, the mentors who are willing to think and stack and retry until the cairn is stable - at least until someone bumps the table, but we will do it all over again.
Our first conversation starter is a question:
What is the value of having a program at OCCC that will have trained student mentors available for any student who may be struggling at the college?
I will read your responses with respect and seriousness, and I will ask the same respect and seriousness of you as your share your thoughts and ideas. Thanks so much.
