The cognitive area addresses intellectual functions such as reasoning, problem solving, and knowledge. Concepts of similarities/differences, size, and position are also assigned in this section. Some of these skills overlap with language development.

Language development is divided in two categories: Receptive and Expressive.
Receptive skills assess abilities in some areas of language comprehension, while expressive skills assess some abilities of children giving appropriate oral language responses.

For clarity, the age referenced next to the skill is the age that is developmentally appropriate for that skill.

Here at Lollivill we assess the children quarterly via Early Learning Accomplishment Profile, which is a criterion-referenced assessment tool for children from birth to 36 months, designed to measure development across six key domains: gross motor, fine motor, cognitive, language, self-help, and social-emotional.

This assessment helps us and the children’s families identify both acquired and emerging skills, creating a profile to plan individualized, developmentally appropriate activities that can be done in the environment of their own home or implemented via lesson planning here at child care.

This week we have decided to share footage of how this assessment helps us evaluate development, track progress, and create individualized instruction for our infants and toddlers, including those who may seem/be delayed.
