We are family-oriented, natural science focused and place an emphasis on emergent learning and free play in nature. At Southern Wonder Nature School, we will learn about Alabama’s biodiversity and natural resources by exploring the natural environment to develop a connection to the land, to wildlife and to each other.

Come cool down with us in the water this September!

Our Homeschool Enrichment Program will be starting a Water Unit Study and our Forest Families Program kicks off the first week of September.

We will be learning all about water: water chemistry, aquatic organisms, and watersheds. And we will have time to simply play and explore in the water.

Check out our page for more details or send us a message with questions.

Hope to see you in the water!

This morning, we participated in The Great Southeast Pollinator Census. We observed so many different pollinators, including bees and flys. And then we cooled off in the stream and enjoyed some play time in nature.

This week at forest school, we continued our Pollinator Unit Study.

For both our Middle School/High School and Elementary Homeschool Enrichment Programs, we explored the different types of pollinators and talked about what type of flowers they need and ways that we can create a pollinator-friendly habitat.

We went on a pollinator scavenger hunt and made observations on the pollinators we saw and the flower color they were visiting. We found that there are loads of purple flowers in bloom at the moment, but lesser amounts of other colors. We were able to observe quite a few smaller bees.

We spent some time playing in the water and walking our stream. We came across some interesting fungi along the way. We also got caught in a summer shower on our way back. The reality of forest school- sometimes you get caught in the rain and you rush back to save the books that you forgot to cover :)

Next week, we will be participating in the Great Southeast Pollinator Census. During our final week, we will be working on some pollinator-friendly habitat improvements around our outdoor classroom area. It's not too late to join in on our program.

Stay tuned for more updates on what's coming up in September at Southern Wonder Nature School.
