“As a freshman, I was invited to apply for the activities team position. I applied and got a position planning traditional events like Homecoming. After that, I was hooked on being involved! Sometimes it’s hard to search for places and people on your own who help you feel a sense of belonging. But if you are invited to join an event, activity, club, etc. GO TO IT! It might just be the thing that helps you find that sense of “home.” Do NOT turn down opportunities that are placed in front of you! Allow others to approach you and talk to you about the opportunities that are available to you. The sooner you get involved, the better your college experience will be. Through getting involved, I have learned social and leadership skills that I could’ve never learned in a classroom. I also have learned so much about myself and the skills and traits I have that are an asset. “The first step I took to get involved was interacting with the people around me. My roommates, my classmates, etc. I knew that it was up to me to create the college experience that I wanted so I reached out and it was the best thing that I could've ever done. There are so many amazing people around you, a lot of the time we just don't talk to them so we never know. Don't be scared to mess up or say something weird. Now, I make sure others know all the things available to us at WSU. Being involved in the student ambassador program and WSUSA has given me a chance to be with student leaders who want to make everyone feel included as well as making campus a fun place to be. Nothing can replace the personal connection you can get by taking the time to talk to one person about their day, interests, or concerns. “I was enrolled in a First Year Experience (FYE) course when a guest presenter came to speak about CliftonStrengths. I was immediately interested in the topic, so I stayed after class to talk with him. During our conversation, he encouraged me to apply for student government. Taking a leap of faith, I decided to run for a position. That decision ended up transforming my college experience in ways I never expected. I continued to put myself out there, determined to create a college experience where I wouldn’t miss out on the social benefits. With that goal in mind, I decided to take the lead and actively seek out opportunities to get involved and make meaningful connections.” - Landon Coombs, WSUSA Executive Vice President

“About two years ago I began working for the Student Success Center (SSC) as a Thrive Team member. As part of my position, I began attending events and familiarizing myself with all the amazing resources available on campus. My engagement made me feel more confident to engage in leadership roles in the SSC, and later on, for WSUSA, and Americorps as a service member. My position on campus helped introduce me to students from all different backgrounds who had different experiences on campus. I felt connected with my peers at the SSC and surrounding departments as we had similar missions and goals. If I could reach out to myself as a freshman, I would tell myself to build connections early on and make the next few years of school meaningful by getting involved on campus and making friends with those in classes, clubs, and cohort.” - Maggie Mecham, Thrive Team
