Our 21st Century Program had a soft start to the year today. Full on programming commences August 24th! While it may look like the kids are "just playing", they are working on living a Healthy and Active Lifestyle one of the components the 21st Century grant encourages and supports! Not to mention they are working on soft skills such as communication and cooperation! Enjoy the pictures and we'll see everyone on Monday!

Time to Meet the Hyde County Schools CTE Department!

At Hyde County Schools, Career and Technical Education (CTE) is about preparing students for college, careers, and life. Through hands-on learning, career exploration, industry and community partnerships, career pathways, and work-based learning opportunities, our CTE team helps students discover their passions, build real-world skills, and prepare for successful futures in high-demand careers.

Dr. Melanie Shaver, Superintendent (while also overseeing the CTE Department as Director)

Dr. Shaver loves working with Career and Technical Education because it empowers students to discover their passions, develop real-world skills, and graduate with meaningful opportunities for college, careers, and lifelong success. For her, seeing students gain confidence through hands-on learning and strong community partnerships makes CTE one of the most rewarding parts of her work.

Joan O’Neal – Middle School Career Development Coordinator / Ocracoke Work-Based Learning Coordinator / Citizen Hyde Coordinator

Joan has served Hyde County Schools for four years, including time as a K–12 Health and Physical Education teacher and Business CTE teacher at Ocracoke School. As an Ocracoke School graduate, Joan returned home to give back to the school system that helped shape her. Today, she helps students across Hyde County discover their strengths, explore career pathways, and prepare for successful futures.

Cara Equils – Dean of Hyde Academy / Career Development Coordinator

Cara has dedicated six years to Hyde County Schools. She is drawn to the strong sense of community, connection, and commitment to students found within our district. Cara values the opportunity to truly know our students and families and make a meaningful difference in their lives—both inside and outside the classroom.

Alison Potter – Accountability & CTE Administrative Assistant

With 24 years of service, Alison treasures the people who make Hyde County Schools special. To her, working in HCS is like having an extended family. A family that works and grows together, encourages one another through the highs and lows, and strives to make a difference one day at a time.
