🚨 Urgent Wake-Up Call for Early Childhood Development

In England, 1 in 4 children starting reception class (equivalent to U.S. pre-K or kindergarten for 4–5-year-olds) are not fully toilet trained.

Frequent accidents are now routine in many classrooms.

The problem runs deeper:

• 37% of children arrive “not school-ready”—a rise from last year

• 28% do not know how to use a physical book properly—they try to tap or swipe the pages as if it were a tablet or smartphone

• Many cannot hold a pencil properly, dress themselves independently, or feed themselves

• In the north-east, the figure reaches 36% for toilet-training issues alone

Teachers report losing significant instructional time each day managing basic self-care needs that should already be in place.

This growing readiness gap is driven by excessive screen time, declining local support services, economic pressures on families, and reduced expectations around early independence.

We cannot afford to wait.

Early skill-building must become a national priority—for parents, educators, and policymakers alike.

The United States is facing similar struggles in kindergarten readiness, with post-pandemic effects amplifying the issues:

• Toilet Training Gaps: One in five parents report ongoing struggles with potty training their toddlers, often delaying mastery beyond typical ages (18-36 months). In California, transitional kindergarten programs for 4-year-olds are dealing with many students not fully potty-trained, complicating classroom dynamics. Teachers in states like Tennessee note some "pandemic babies" arriving without this skill.

• Broader Readiness Decline: Overall readiness has dropped, with only 81% of 5-year-olds ready for reading (down from 89% in 2019) and 70% for math (down from 84%). Disparities are stark by race and income, with majority Black and Hispanic schools lagging further.

• Screen Time's Role: Excessive device use, which spiked during lockdowns, correlates with shorter attention spans, behavioral issues, poor vocabulary, and delayed milestones like fine motor skills.

This is no longer a distant problem—it's happening here, now, in classrooms across America and the UK.

If we do not act decisively to rebuild foundational independence, limit harmful screen exposure, and support families with practical early-years resources, we risk an entire generation starting school already behind—facing steeper academic hurdles, lower confidence, and widening inequality that will linger for decades.
