Did you know the Purple Pitcherplant (Sarracenia purpurea L) grows in bogs, one of Maryland’s most unique and fragile wetland habitats? Bogs are fascinating ecosystems with acidic, nutrient-poor soils, and plants like the Purple Pitcherplant have adapted in amazing ways to survive there.
We are fortunate to have both a bog and these fascinating plants right here on the grounds of the Maryland 4-H Environmental Education and Camping Center. These special natural areas give campers the chance to hike, explore, and observe up close while learning from our talented naturalist about unique habitats and the importance of protecting our natural resources.
We believe that learning can happen anywhere, and the MD 4-H Camping Center uses places like this as outdoor classrooms, helping connect youth with nature through exploration, discovery, and environmental education.
