I had total knee replacement surgery eight days ago. I'm hurting, and I've learned the hard way to listen to my body, not push myself too hard and rest when needed. However, after a week of sitting on the couch alternately napping, crocheting and reading, I've decided that it would be good for my mental health to establish a very loose work routine, feel productive and bring in a few bucks. I've tentatively (will my healing process allow the work?) accepted a copy editing assignment that will exercise my mind and fill some long, dull hours on the couch. But this experience is also teaching me to be open to the signals that it's time to say no -- if doing Chapter 1 wears me out too much, I'll have to admit I'm not ready, regretfully bow out and go back to napping. Image shows my makeshift sofa-based workstation.
