To the pioneers in media that broke barriers. On this day In February 1944, Harry McAlpin, a former Navy war correspondent and reporter for the National Negro Press Association and the Atlanta Daily World, received his requested credentials to attend an upcoming press conference with President Franklin Roosevelt.

With the times and opposing nay-sayers advising him not to cross. McAlpin ignored the fellow’s warning and entered the Oval Office with the other reporters. At the end of the press conference, he approached President Roosevelt who was seated at his desk.  Roosevelt shook McAlpin’s hand, and said, “Harry, I’m glad you are here.”

To the present, on this day Oprah Winfrey would make her mark to the world as The Oprah Winfrey Show across millions of homes. Holding the number one spot for 24 consecutive years, she held the platform for sharing inspirational stories of ordinary folk to interviews with celebrities and self-help advisers. Widely considered one of the most influential women on television, Winfrey's book club selections and favorite things list can make a product wildly popular.
