Today I’m celebrating Independence Day in the United States. But I’m also celebrating something far more personal.
My own independence.
Not freedom from circumstances.
Freedom from the internal forces that spent decades convincing me they were protecting me, when in reality they were keeping me small.
That realization became the opening to the final chapter of the book I’ve been writing.
————
With independence comes space.
Space to see clearly.
Space to feel fully.
Space to heal.
Space to expand.
And in that space comes something quieter than triumph, but far more enduring.
Wisdom.
Wisdom to know what is mine to carry—and what was never mine to hold.
Wisdom to see beneath the surface of people, patterns, and pain.
Wisdom to choose alignment over approval.
Wisdom to recognize what belongs in my life—and what does not.
Wisdom to change direction without abandoning myself.
Wisdom to forgive others.
Wisdom to forgive myself.
Wisdom to stop overfilling others’ cups while my own ran empty.
Wisdom to understand that “first things first” is not selfishness—it is foundation.
Self, then others.
Not instead of others.
But so that others are no longer fed from depletion.
The strength to say no without explanation.
The courage to break cycles that once defined me.
The clarity to be honest—even when it is uncomfortable.
And ultimately, the ability to look in the mirror and recognize someone I trust.
A leader I respect.
A human being I can live inside of.
The courageous, ethical, influential leader.
Not as performance.
But as being.
———
This chapter is less about leadership than I expected. It’s about becoming someone who no longer needs to prove they deserve to lead.
Happy Independence Day!
