COL Steve Schmidt, Commander of 7th Brigade, visited Notre Dame to recognize the Fightin’ Irish Battalion as the 2025 General Douglas MacArthur Award recipient, marking the 7th time our program has earned the title of top program in 7th Brigade.

COL Schmidt also recognized our Professor of Military Science, LTC William Kobbe, as the 2025 PMS of the Year. This marks his second time earning the prestigious U.S. Army Cadet Command honor, a testament to his exceptional leadership of our program. ☘️

CDTs Thornburg (’27) and Wheeler (’27) both earned RECONDO status at CST, ranking 4th and 46th in the nation, respectively.

Thornburg also received the AUSA Leadership Excellence Award, recognizing him as the top cadet of 7th Regiment, as selected by the regimental cadre board. Congratulations!

A strong finish to CST 2026! The Fightin’ Irish Battalion finished 5th overall out of 260 Army ROTC programs in the nation. Of our 24 cadets who completed CST, 8 finished in the top 10% of all graduates, showcasing the hard work and dedication they’ve put in throughout their time at Notre Dame. We are so proud!

This summer, CDTs Thornburg, Gawkins, Kaardal, Oesterle, Loney, Gordillo, and Sear (’27) had the opportunity to train with cadets from the Irish Defence Forces Cadet School (The Cadet School )as part of an exchange program between our two organizations. Throughout their time in Ireland, they completed a 24-hour dig-in, participated in a SERE-B exercise, observed a live-fire exercise, explored Dublin, and hiked across the country. 🇮🇪

☘️Summer Spotlight
Nine of our Fighting Irish Battalion cadets traveled across Europe on a WWII staff ride, exploring historic sites in England, France, Belgium, Germany, and Luxembourg. Led by Dr. Brian DeToy (’85), the experience included visits to Churchill’s War Rooms, Juno, Utah, and Omaha Beaches, and the Normandy American Cemetery, offering cadets a unique opportunity to study the history, leadership, and sacrifices of World War II firsthand.

☘️Summer Spotlight
CDT Jimenez (’28) and CDT Sweeney (’28) are spending their time in Mexico City through Notre Dame’s Global Professional Experience (GPE) program. Jimenez is working on projects focused on sustainable development and educational opportunities through internships with the Government of Querétaro and Fulbright COMEXUS, while Sweeney is supporting strategic planning and expansion efforts at legal tech startup ELTEMATE. Along the way, they’re taking Spanish classes, exploring Mexico City, and making the most of this incredible opportunity! 🇲🇽

Newest Air Assault Grad!!

Congratulations CDT Barcena (‘28) for graduating Air Assault at the United State Military Academy! Air Assault is a 10-day intensive physical and mental course that covers helicopter operations, safety, and sling-load capabilities. CDTs Dacunto and Zaino (both ‘29) were able to make it to her graduation!
