What happens when a high school senior becomes the teacher?

As P-TECH students worked together to build a humanoid robot from the ground up this spring, one senior stepped into an unexpected role. Through P-TECH's Grow Your Own Teacher program, Deshaun M. became the student instructor, leading freshmen and sophomores through one of the school's most ambitious projects.

The experience challenged Deshaun to lead his peers, solve problems, and discover a new appreciation for educators—all while helping bring one of P-TECH's most innovative projects to life.

Because sometimes the best way to learn... is to teach.

Not every P-TECH student's journey looks the same, and that's exactly the point.

Some students discover a passion for artificial intelligence. Others find themselves behind a camera, inside an engineering firm, or exploring careers in healthcare.

At P-TECH, students don't follow a single path. They explore different industries, build real-world skills, and discover what excites them before they graduate.

The future isn't one-size-fits-all, and neither is a P-TECH education. Learn more: https://chooseptechnorwalk.org?utm_campaign=2024-25&utm_content=home&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook

🤖 It started with an ambitious goal: build a humanoid robot from the ground up and have it speak at graduation.

In just a few months (starting in February!), P-TECH students designed, coded, 3D printed, tested, troubleshot, and assembled the robot—learning new technologies and overcoming challenges every step of the way.

There were plenty of moments of trial and error, but that's exactly where the learning happened.

By graduation day, their hard work paid off. The robot took the stage and addressed the Class of 2026—a fitting finale to a project that challenged students to think creatively, collaborate, and push beyond what they thought was possible.

For P-TECH Norwalk 11th grader Andrew, one of the highlights of the recent Emery Stinger Jr. STEM Conference at Fairfield University was getting the chance to experience STEM in a more hands-on and interactive way.

From extracting DNA from fruit to hearing from professionals working in STEM fields, the day gave students the opportunity to explore new ideas, ask questions, and experience a college campus environment firsthand!

And yes, according to Andrew, the dining hall food definitely lived up to the hype. 🍽️

P-TECH Norwalk students recently attended the Emery Stinger Jr. STEM Conference at Fairfield University, where they spent the day exploring STEM through hands-on learning, guest speakers, and campus experiences. 🧬

Students extracted DNA from fruit, investigated the inner workings of a campus delivery robot, and heard from professionals about careers and innovation in STEM fields. They also toured parts of the Fairfield campus and got a taste of college life, including lunch in the dining hall.

💬 “The event also talked about the steps for applying to college. Walking around the campus was really nice, but most importantly, the vibe and what the school offered for paths I plan to take was great." -Josh, Grade 9

Experiences like this help students connect what they’re learning in the classroom to future opportunities in STEM and beyond!

P-TECH students recently visited Gorilla Commerce, a Norwalk-based e-commerce company, for a job shadow experience that gave them a real look inside the fast-moving worlds of technology, AI, and online business.

Students heard directly from the company’s CEO and CTO about everything from scaling online brands to how tools like ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini are being used in the workplace today. They also met with the product team to learn how products are researched, marketed, and sold through platforms like Amazon.

What stood out most was how engaged the students were — asking thoughtful questions, exploring career possibilities, and connecting classroom learning to real-world applications.

💬 “This experience made me realize I’m interested in careers where I can work with people, solve problems, and be part of an organized team. It also helped me start thinking more clearly about what types of roles I might want to look at in the future.” — Orbin, Grade 11

To top it all off, students were invited to apply for summer internships at Gorilla Commerce!
