One of the features @ crackthematch.com that may intrigue many is the Social Data (please see screenshot).

The idea is to leverage the collective intelligence to keep the data relevant to the site.

There are over 3000 programs that candidates can choose from, however, researching individually is very difficult. Instead, if each of us contributes to the data it will be beneficial on the whole. This is very similar to how people get together to collect data in a spreadsheet, only more structured and usable.

In the attached screenshot you will see apart from the scores shown, there is a little form which allows you to contribute data such as Step 1 Score, Step 2 CK score and Year of Graduation requirement of the program that you already know of.

Once you contribute to 10 such data points you will be able to see the median data of everyone who has contributed to that data.

You will be surprised in a very short period of time when you would start seeing great information on the site. (not possible without your support though)

All you need to do is pick any 5 programs whose data you might already know and update their values.

Please leave a feedback on what you think about the feature.

PS: Periodically we will update our main database with the socially gathered data so you could filter programs based on them.

Recently I had a conversation with one of my friends and a Chief Resident at a program. One of the simple strategy that he alluded to was to take your time in giving your USMLE Step 1. We both agreed that it is the single most important step that one could take in succeeding in matching to a program. This is especially true for older graduates.

Once you achieve a good score in Step 1 you have better luck in your favor. The odds of your application being reviewed is increased. It becomes easier as a committee in the program to be convinced to give you a chance in the form of an interview at the get go.

The second most important thing is to get clinical experience in the US (USCE).

Putting these two simple strategies you are sure to increase your chance in matching to a residency program in the USA.

So, first and foremost focus on giving your best shot at USMLE Step 1 exam. If you feel that you need to postpone your exam by a few months or even a year, I'd recommend go ahead and do it. The additional time that you would waste later because of a low score, justifies the investment in more time for the exam.

We strongly believe that, the highlighted criteria should be the focus (particularly for grads with a large gap between graduation and residency program application) for candidates.

So, crack the Step 1 exam which will psychologically lend its way to doing well in Step 2 CK and CS and find ways to get USCE which will help with "Personal prior knowledge of the applicant", getting good "Letters of Recommendations in the specialty" , bridging the "Gaps in medical education", and with "Grades in clerkship in desired specialty"
