Merry Christmas, everyone!

As it is Christmas time, we thank God for watching over us. Sometimes, it’s difficult to articulate what Christmas means. It is quite aptly put by Linus from Charlie Brown.

Charlie Brown laments, “I guess you were right, Linus. I shouldn’t have picked this little tree,” said Charlie Brown. “Everything I do turns into a disaster. I guess I don’t really know what Christmas is all about. Isn’t there anyone who knows what Christmas is all about?”

“Sure, Charlie Brown, I can tell you what Christmas is all about,” said Linus.

“Lights, please.”

“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid.
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

When he is finished with that last line, Linus turns to the audience: “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

Education reforms don't matter if Michigan doesn't tackle its crisis in chronic absenteeism.

My comments before the State Board of Education on their attempt to move gender and s*xuality topics into the health curriculum (I swear it’s me, even though you can only see the back of my head).

Takeaways:

This is another bad idea from the Department of Education.

These topics should be covered exclusively at home.

This plan will pit teachers, who are forced to defend the policy, against parents. Rank and file teachers don’t want that.

This crowds out other learning.

This puts school districts at legal and financial risk, as parents will sue if their requests to opt out of these topics are denied.

This will exacerbate the decline in enrollment, as parents who don’t want these subjects taught by someone other than themselves will disenroll their children and choose other options.

Oh, and Nikki Snyder and Tom McMillan need help, badly.
