The history of AI in Mental Health
As we wrap up an exhausting day or attempt to get through with hard times, we all yearn to have someone who would be there to ask us these questions. But what if that “someone” is a bot or computer program? And what if this concept is not exactly new?
Did you know that interestingly, it all began in the 1960’s when Joseph Weizenbaum, a computer scientist at MIT, invented a computer program called ELIZA. This was a chatbot that searched to pinpoint a keyword in the statement of the user which it could use to rephrase as a question or a statement to respond to them.
In spite of being a simple concept, ELIZA turned out to be immensely successful and intrigued its users far more than Weizenbaum had anticipated. The users ended up sharing intimate life details with ELIZA adapting the program as a therapist of sorts and unloading their deepest thoughts and fears to it.
Designed to interact in the mode of a psychotherapist, ELIZA succeeded in making its users feel like it cared, despite being a mere code. People indulged in lengthy interactions with the bot that largely resembled therapy sessions.
Being among the first computer programs that simulated human interactions, ELIZA had managed to deeply immerse its users, which alarmed Weizenbaum.
Weizenbaum was shocked that the users had found solace and trust in a creation formed through algorithms and circuits. This eventually led him to emerge as an AI critic as he dwelled over the bigger picture of the dominance of machines and their ability to emotionally connect with humans and simulate human comprehension.

4 Steps To Finding Your Inner Voice

1. Be Willing To Be Still
We can not hear the divine knowledge if we are not willing to be still. And I’m not referring to just closing your eyes and sitting. Being truly still requires quieting of the mind, stopping all the chatter and being willing to hear what lies underneath. You have to be truly present with yourself. A very hard task if you’ve been avoiding your truest deepest self.
When I ask if people meditate, the responses are typical that there isn’t enough time, or it seems silly – just to sit there and do nothing. Others tell me that it’s useless because they can’t stop the chatter in their minds.
There is usually a reason for our hesitancy. Anxiety can exist in just being quiet, completely letting go of all thought. It takes courage to be in silence to hear the lesson which we can teach ourselves. Don’t give up. Be patient and you will learn what your divine nature is trying to teach.

Types of Inner Critic Voices You Must Learn to Silence
Part 1
Here are types of inner critic voices that can help you figure out the thinking patterns that are getting in the way of your happiness and success.
1. Perfectionist
The Perfectionist is your inner high achiever who sets generally unattainable goals for yourself, resulting in frustration and dissatisfaction. This inner critic constantly pushes you to be the best at everything you do, often leading to disappointment, frustration, anxiety, and burnout.
The Perfectionist’s favorite phrases are:
• “Try harder.”
• “You’ll never achieve anything really great.”
• “You should not ask for help.”
• “You should not make a mistake.”
2. Guilt-Tripper
Your guilt-tripper makes it difficult to forgive yourself for what you have said or done. It keeps you stuck in the past, constantly reminding you of mistakes and wrongs you’ve done and stopping you from being kind to yourself.

The Functions of Internal Dialogs and Their Connection with Personality
Part 2
Internal dialog means that a person alternately adopts (at least) two different viewpoints and that utterances formulated from these viewpoints refer to one another (Puchalska-Wasyl, 2015b; cf. Hermans & Hermans-Jansen, 1995). According to DST, parties to internal dialog can be I-positions representing the person’s own and/or someone else’s viewpoints. This means that, for example, if I have a problem with my child I can consider it the way Tevye does, alternately adopting two personal viewpoints (e.g., “I as a traditionalist”and “I as a liberal parent”), or I can imagine my own conversation with my unruly child.
There are very few studies on the determinants of this
phenomenon. They suggest that personality traits are related to
the willingness to engage in internal dialogs. Using the Internal
Dialogical Activity Scale (IDAS; Oles, 2009) to assess the
intensity of internal dialogs, and using the Revised NEO
Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R; Costa & McCrae, 1992) to
measure traits, moderate correlation was found between the

The Functions of Internal Dialogs and Their Connection with Personality
Part 1
In the Oscar-winning Fiddler on the Roof, the protagonist, Tevye – a poor Jew living in Tsarist Russia – plans to marry off his three daughters in keeping with tradition to ensure them safety and comfort. However, the daughters choose their future husbands themselves, against his vision. Each time Tevye considers whether to accept a daughter’s choice, he starts with an argument representing his typical thinking about the situation, but immediately adds: “on the other hand” and formulates a counterargument from a different, contrary perspective, then refuting it from the former perspective again, etc. What is it, actually, that Tevye is doing?
In the literature, this phenomenon is known by many different names: self-talk (Brinthaupt & Dove, 2012), self-statements (Kamann & Wong, 1993), private speech (Winsler, Fernyhough & Montero, 2009), inner speech (MacKay, 1992), and interior monolog (Hogenraad & Orianne, 1983). In this article, it will be referred to as “internal dialog” (Hermans & Hermans-Jansen, 1995; Puchalska-Wasyl, 2015b). Unlike the other terms, “internal dialog” implies that there are (at least) two distinct communicating parties within one self. Thus, more clearly than the others, this term presupposes that the self is not monolythic. This idea is broadly accepted in the cognitive approach (Higgins, 1987; Markus & Nurius, 1986; Markus & Wurf, 1987; Ogilvie, 1987), and polypsychism (Assagioli, 2000; Rowan, 1990), but above all in the dialogical approach with its pivotal dialogical self theory (DST; Hermans, 2003; Hermans & Gieser, 2012; Hermans & Hermans-Jansen, 1995). According to DST, a person can adopt many different viewpoints (perspectives), called I-positions here. The dialogical self is conceptualized as a dynamic multiplicity of relatively autonomous I-positions. Each I-position, shaped in a particular social context, has a voice (the voice of a culture, a community, a significant other, or one’s own voice, etc.) and interacts with other I-positions resembling people in social relationships (Hermans, 2003). This makes not only external (interpersonal) but also internal (intrapersonal) dialogs possible.
