Today’s training was a success. I had virtual participants from Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, and Chicago. This was the first virtual option I’ve offered. I’ve participated in virtual trainings but not as a solo presenter setting it all up and simultaneously monitoring the chat. My late husband Brandon really encouraged me to offer a virtual option. When he passed I cancelled the rest of the trainings this summer but I had several people interested and registered that I couldn’t cancel. Brandon would not have wanted me to do that. He was always so supportive of whatever dream I wanted to chase next. Today was so amazing. I think I’ll have to offer this training again sooner rather than later.

Some days my oldest group of students make me want to pull my hair out. Today I watched 3 actually help each other…not just give the answers but use their strengths to help their classmate.

It is difficult to maintain a positive attitude at school every day when so many things you are asked to do are a struggle because of a learning difference. By high school many kids are labeled lazy or it is believed they don’t care. In 27 years I have NEVER met a child that didn’t care. I met plenty who were mad that they still cared even though the work was difficult and they felt no one really wanted to help them.

We are approaching the last 9 weeks of another school year. I am equal parts amazed by the growth of my students and stressed because there is never enough time to teach them all I think they need. But this week alone I have had a student reach out to me 3 separate times for help and advice. I’m not sure if I actually provided real help or advice but I was there to listen and help the student think through what would be best for them because they CARE and they know I believe in them even when they don’t.

Some days I wonder why I do this because I get overwhelmed by how many kids need help. Other days I feel so blessed to have opportunities to help a child realize how amazing God made them.

There are no quick fixes. There are no short cuts. No one’s journey is the same even though stories are eerily familiar. Say Dyslexia!
