ACES Bassett Road School Village School provides a comprehensive program with inclusive services.

ACES Bassett Road School provides comprehensive, individualized educational programming for students ages 3-22 with significant cognitive, developmental, behavioral, communication, and medical support needs. Related services include speech, physical, occupational, and music therapies as well as social, nursing, and behavior services. The multi-disciplinary teams of educators, therapists, and medical personnel work collaboratively to provide empirically-based instruction in academics, behavior, speech/language development, and play/social skills.

On Friday, our students had the opportunity to enjoy a special visit to the North Haven Fair! Each year, the North Haven Fair generously opens its doors to the ACES community on the Friday of Fair Weekend, giving our students the chance to experience all the sights, sounds, and excitement of the fair.

We are incredibly grateful to our friends at the North Haven Fair for their continued kindness, generosity, and support of ACES. đź’™ Experiences like these create meaningful opportunities for our students to learn, explore, and make memories within their community.

This week’s Positive Impact Spotlight shines on Laura Andersen, an Occupational Therapist who has been with ACES since August 2022. Laura was nominated by colleagues who described her as a positive role model who brings “light and joy” to Bassett Road School. They highlighted not only the smile and positive attitude she brings each day, but also her strong advocacy for students. From bringing teams together to discuss student plans, to organizing functional groups and developing systems that help classrooms and therapists work more efficiently, Laura’s colleagues see the positive impact she has on both students and staff. Laura’s path to ACES Bassett Road School began at Tufts, where she studied child development and worked at a nature-based elementary school before earning her masters and post-professional doctorate. Her early career started in Boston, where working for Easter Seals across a variety of settings gave her the opportunity to learn and grow as a new practitioner. After returning to Connecticut and working in Waterbury Public Schools, Laura knew she ultimately wanted to work in a specialized school setting where strong supports would allow her to work closely with students and see their progress over time. What keeps Laura here is the strength of the team and, most importantly, the students. She loves getting to know each student’s unique personality and being able to look beyond moments of dysregulation to see who they truly are. She has also enjoyed seeing our programs come together this year and believes the merger has made both programs even stronger. Outside of work, Laura enjoys life with her husband and their one-year-old daughter. They are self-described “outside people” who enjoy Block Island, biking, hiking, gardening, yoga, skiing, and walks with their Lab/Border Collie mix. Thank you, Laura, for the positivity, collaboration, and advocacy you bring to ACES Bassett Road School. Making a positive impact means creating opportunities for our students to build strength, confidence, and independence in meaningful ways. During a recent Physical Therapy session, one of our students put in the work with tire flips! Building functional strength, coordination, motor planning, and perseverance with every push.

Sometimes positive impact looks like a big moment. Sometimes, it looks like one more flip. Every repetition, every challenge, and every success moves our students forward. That’s impact in action at Bassett Road!

This week’s Positive Impact Spotlight shines on Nicole Richardson (BCBA), who has been part of ACES since 2011. Nicole was nominated by colleagues who highlighted just how deeply she cares about our students and her commitment to making each day safe, productive, and meaningful. They also gave a special nod to the way Nicole moves….REALLY fast…..describing the coordination of some of our bigger students during transportation as “absolute poetry in motion.”
Nicole began her ACES career as an ABA Trainer before becoming a Lead Trainer and eventually her current role of BCBA. She originally came to ACES unsure of what direction she wanted to take with her psychology degree, but during her first year as a Lead, working alongside Shaquana Cobbs and connecting with one student helped everything click. She saw the science behind the work come to life, discovered her “why,” and knew she wanted to continue her education to become a BCBA.
Today, becoming a mom has added another layer to how Nicole approaches her work. She tries to support each student in the way she would hope someone would care for and support her own child. Nicole says it is the teams she has worked with and the impact they have made together that continue to bring her back to ACES. She believes that with a strong team, there is no limit to the positive impact they can make.
Outside of work, Nicole loves spending time with her daughter, a graduate of our integrated preschool program. She embraces whatever her daughter is interested in (even learning all about gymnastics) and they love traveling as a family, with Aruba being a favorite destination. Nicole is also a runner, although she will be the first to tell you that she hates running!
Thank you, Nicole, for the care, energy, and commitment you bring to our students and your team. Your belief in what we can accomplish together continues to make a positive impact throughout Bassett Road!

Making a positive impact means creating opportunities for our students to build skills that extend beyond the classroom. In our Upper Grove program, regular community outings allow students to practice meaningful, real-world skills in authentic settings. During a recent shopping trip, students practiced locating and labeling classroom items, using prepositions while loading the cart and bags, and completing a transaction with a credit card. These experiences build confidence and independence while helping students generalize their learning to the world around them. This is our purpose in action.

This week’s Bassett Positive Impact Spotlight shines on Kim Bayer, a Training Support Interventionist (TSI) who is beginning her 16th year at ACES! Kim was nominated by colleagues for her patience, positive attitude, willingness to support others across the building, and leadership in implementing our new ABA Trainer training system. Her colleagues especially recognized the important role she has played in helping her fellow TSIs learn the new system so that everyone can work together and in the same direction.
Kim’s connection to ACES and to this work has always been personal. Growing up, she had family members whose lives gave her an early appreciation for the importance of supporting people with different needs, while several members of her family also built careers at ACES. Her mom worked as a TAD, one aunt as an IA/TAD, and another as a Special Education teacher. With a natural love for working with kids, it made sense that Kim would eventually find her own place at ACES. She began as an ABA Trainer, moved into a Lead ABAT role, and eventually became a TSI. Along the way, Kim naturally became someone others turned to for guidance and support, making her role in training and developing staff a natural next step in her journey.
After 16 years, Kim says it is still the students who keep her coming back. She loves seeing them succeed and appreciates that every day is different. She values the flexibility to tailor learning to each student and believes sometimes being a little silly is exactly what it takes to help a student learn! Most importantly, Kim loves being part of a team where the priority is making sure our students feel safe, loved, and happy. Kim’s goal each day is to ensure that the students and the staff feel supported in every aspect.
Outside of work, you are likely to find Kim staying active. She enjoys line dancing and is a regular at Cadillac Ranch! She also always makes time for her workouts at Crossfit as she thoroughly enjoys going there.

This week’s Positive Impact Spotlight shines on Gabbie Mitchell, who is beginning her third year as a Social Worker with our school community. Gabbie was nominated for the many ways she supports our entire Bassett Road community. Her colleague described her as a “strong and supportive presence” who is always willing to listen, problem-solve, and step up for students, staff, and families. They also highlighted her dedication to our Climate and Culture Team, where her thoughtful contributions helped shape much of the plan.
Before joining ACES, Gabbie spent more than six years working for DCF. Looking for a change and a “fun new adventure,” she joined our team and discovered a passion for the work we do. Gabbie shared that working with underrepresented populations and advocating for those who need a voice is especially important to her. She loves her daily interactions with students and strives to be a consistent presence who shows them care and love. She also values supporting families and connecting them with resources, knowing that helping them navigate challenges is another way she can make a positive impact.
Gabbie’s support extends to her colleagues through Wellness Wednesdays, an initiative she created because she sees how hard our staff work and wanted to give them opportunities to decompress and take care of themselves. Outside of work, Gabbie takes some of her own advice by spending time in nature, taking walks, collecting crystals, and traveling…..with St. Lucia being a favorite destination!

Last week was a great start to the 2026–2027 school year for the Grove Program at ACES Bassett Road School! From welcoming students back, to staff learning and collaborating together, to a well-deserved ice cream treat, our first few days highlighted the strong relationships and strong systems that provide the foundation for our work. Most importantly, those systems allow us to stay focused on our shared purpose: making a positive impact in the lives of our students, families, and colleagues.

We’re proud of the way the students and staff in our Grove program started the year and are looking forward to another great week ahead!

This week’s Positive Impact Spotlight shines on Jazmine Shipp, an ABA Trainer who has been part of the ACES team for the past three years as an ABAT. Jazmine was nominated by a colleague who described her as a true team player, sharing that whether she is taking on an additional student or supporting one of our students with the most challenging needs, Jazmine maintains a positive attitude and is always willing to step in where she is needed. Her flexibility, dedication, and commitment to both students and her team make her an incredibly valuable part of our school community.
Jazmine originally came to ACES because of a personal connection that inspired her to better understand children with autism. She wanted to learn not only how to connect with our students, but also how to help them understand and connect with her. Three years later, it is those relationships that continue to bring her to work each day. Jazmine shared that this is the first job where she genuinely comes to work with a smile on her face and can leave everything else at the door. She loves her students, enjoys the relationships she has built with her coworkers, and appreciates being part of a team that works well together and still manages to have fun along the way. Jazmine acknowledges that every day in this work is not easy, but says it is absolutely worth it, especially when she gets to see the growth our students make each day.
Outside of work, Jazmine is a busy mom of two, works as a CNA, and is currently pursuing a degree in Psychology….all while maintaining an impressive 4.0 GPA and earning a spot on the Dean’s List! When she actually finds a little time to relax, you can usually find her scrolling through TikTok to decompress.
Thank you, Jazmine, for the positivity, flexibility, and care you bring to ACES Bassett Road each day. Through the relationships you build and your commitment to our students and team, you truly make a positive impact every day!
