Getting food, medicine and everyday supplies to rural communities is not always simple, especially across long stretches of highway and underserved areas.
Researchers at The University of Oklahoma are working to change that.
Through a major federally funded project, OU researchers are studying how autonomous freight technology could make transportation safer, faster and more reliable for rural and tribal communities across Oklahoma, New Mexico and Arizona.
Led by D**g Zhang, Ph.D., and Musharraf Zaman, Ph.D., the ACCEL-RT project will explore how emerging vehicle technologies can help improve supply delivery, reduce transportation disruptions and strengthen critical infrastructure along the I-40 corridor.
The project also focuses on listening directly to rural and tribal communities to ensure these solutions are practical, trusted and designed around real needs.
With support from the U.S. Department of Transportation, OU is helping shape the future of transportation in ways that could impact communities across the country.

Water is one of our most critical resources, but maintaining it is becoming one of our biggest challenges.
Yanhua Xie, an assistant professor in the OU College of Atmospheric & Geographic Sciences, is helping lead an international research effort to better understand how water systems have changed over the past 60 years.
Through advanced modeling of agricultural irrigation and global water patterns, this work aims to improve how we manage and sustain water resources for future generations.
