Join Dr. Jason Gulya for “What Does the Rise of AI Mean for Us?” September 30–October 4 on the OU campus. During this five-day OSLEP seminar, students will explore how AI affects human thinking, the ethical questions it raises, and the ways it may reshape society.

OSLEP seminars earn students three credit hours, and books, meals, and lodging are provided. Students pay tuition to their home institution.

THE WORLDS OF RODGERS AND HAMMERSTEIN�

The works of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein course through the bloodstream of America. From their first collaboration, Oklahoma! in 1943, until Oscar Hammerstein’s death during the creation of The Sound of Music in 1959, this duo shaped American culture in dynamic ways and, in turn, those works were molded into form through the crucible of mid-century America. For better and for worse, America continues to sound and act a lot like a Rodgers and Hammerstein musical.

Which is why a class like this offers a special opportunity to understand America better through these very musicals. This class will spend focused energy on several representative musicals, including Oklahoma!, Carousel, The King and I, and South Pacific, as well as musicals created before and since the Rodgers and Hammerstein era. Through close readings on religion, politics, belief, and theatricality, we will attempt to come to a better understanding of how musicals work and, in turn, the work musicals do in the world.

WHAT DOES THE RISE OF AI MEAN FOR US?

In this seminar, we will have a wide range of conversations about what the rise of Artificial Intelligence — including, but not limited to tools like ChatGPT — mean for us. We will dedicate our time to approaching three big questions:

(a) what does the rise of AI mean for the future of thinking?
(b) what does the rise of AI mean for the future of ethics?
(c) what does the rise of AI mean for the future of society?

Our goal is not to become adopters of the technology or to embrace it whole-heartedly. On the contrary, the goal is to apply our critical thinking skills to something that has already begun to shape the way we live, think, and connect with others.
