Dr. Arthur J. Bond (1939 -2012) left a remarkable legacy. His leadership was instrumental in the founding of the NSBE in 1975.

From 1968 to 1971, he built a host of programs to recruit and retain black students into the field of engineering.

NSBE Founder Brian Harris, SBE Treasurer & Chair of the Projects Committee (4/73 -5/75) formulated all social and business plans for the Society of Black Engineers at Purdue University. He managed the logistics for our Big 3 Events:

Oct 1974 - The Equal Opportunity Luncheon
Feb 1975 - The 1st Annual Corporate Banquet
Apr 1975 - The First NSBE Conference

Brian Harris was the First Conference Planning Committee (CPC) Chair in NSBE History. Please join me in a round of applause to thank ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿพ Brian for his monumental effort. For those whoโ€™ve heard me call Brian โ€œour hardest workerโ€, this is why!!

For the historical record, note that we published our Calendar of Events for 1974 & 1975. You can view it in this post. For me, there has never been any mystery about what we did and when we did it ๐Ÿ“†, itโ€™s all โ€œon the recordโ€๐Ÿ“ฐ. We recorded our activities in the first 3 Cornerstone Magazines, youโ€™ll see the cover pages below. I was our first Publications Committee Chair ... it was my job to initially determine the best way to report ๐Ÿ—ฃ the SBE achievements to our members, high school recruits, and to corporations. Some things never change.

So, how did the Chicago Six pull off the Founding of NSBE? First of all, it was not a single event by a single person. It was a series of events and actions taken by our key advisors, committees, and volunteers.

In summary:

WE DID IT by COMMITTEE ๐Ÿ™Œ๐Ÿพ

We did it with the help of Purdue University.
We did it with the help of Dr. Arthur Bond.
We did it with the help of Dr. Saunie Taylor.
We did it with the help of Ed Barnette.
We did it with the help of corporate sponsors.
We did it with the help of many SBE members.
We also did it with the help of SWE.

We did it most importantly, by the Grace of God ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

Who is the Architect of NSBE?

https://www.facebook.com/DrArthurBondPage/videos/385518394889859/

In 1969 after completing his Masters in Electrical Engineering from Purdue University, Arthur Jerome Bond began planning Purdueโ€™s
Program for Disadvantaged Engineering Students. He and Professor Bill LeBold launched the Program in the fall of 1971.

1971 was a pivotal year because it was also the year when PhD candidate Arthur Bond along with Edward Barnette and Fred Cooper founded the Purdue Black Society of Engineers.

In 1974, upon earning his PhD in Electrical Engineering, Arthur J. Bond became the 12th Black American in United States history to achieve this monumental goal.

Also in 1974, Dr. Bond renamed his initiative the Minority Engineering Program and became itโ€™s first Director.

On the campus of Purdue University, on April 12th of 1975, Dr. Arthur J. Bond and the โ€œChicago Sixโ€ founded the National Society of Black Engineers.

Dr. Bond continued as the MEP Director until 1978.

NSBE Founder, Dr. Arthur J. Bond, the author of our Inaugural Constitution, is someone we should remember.

Dr. Arthur J. Bond is โ€œThe Architect of NSBEโ€!

Where did we get the money to start NSBE?

Dr. Arthur J. Bond, our Faculty Advisor, recruited Corporate Sponsors. See the โ€œSource of Fundsโ€ article I wrote in the SBE Recruiting Brochure during the 1973-74 school year.

Join me in applauding and celebrating our Corporate Sponsors and
โ€œThe Purdue Universityโ€ !!!

Today, 8-18-2018, NSBE Ghana, in Africa, celebrates itโ€™s 20 year Anniversary. This is a GLORIOUS MOMENT in the global history of the National Society of Black Engineers!

If NSBE Founder and MEP Visionary Dr. Arthur J. Bond could speak to us today weโ€™re sure he would say ...
Thank God Almighty for continuing to bless and lift our people!!

The following Purdue University interview of Dr. Bond, our Electrical Engineering PhD pioneer, will shine more light on his positive impact on our Society. Keep in mind that Arthur Bondโ€™s journey toward a Purdue engineering education began in 1957. Thatโ€™s right 1957, when the Chicago Six were 4 years old. We stood on his shoulders.

This is the man who pointed the SBE in the right direction and transformed us into NSBE. Without Dr. Arthur J. Bond, NSBE wouldโ€™ve simply been a nice idea. This is why we call him the Architect of NSBE!!!

Like the United States of America, NSBE Founder, Dr. Arthur J. Bond was born on the 4th of July.

About a month ago, the father of a middle school student contacted me. He told me that his son wants to be an engineer when he grows up. His son wanted to know more about Dr. Bond because he chose Dr. Bond for the subject of a summer writing assignment. I constructed a PowerPoint style presentation to serve as the outline for the young fella's research paper.

Today, I'm sharing it with you, as a tribute to the "Architect of NSBE" and role model for the Chicago Six ... Dr. Arthur J. Bond.

Happy Birthday Dr. Bond, we miss you!!!
