Designed specifically around flexible daytime schedules, our classes blend physical fitness, problem-solving, and practical self-defense in a safe, encouraging environment.

Sometimes God doesn’t call the person everyone expects. Sometimes He calls Jael.

Judges 4 tells one of the most unexpected stories in Scripture.

Israel was being oppressed by the Canaanites. Sisera, the commander of their army, fled the battlefield and sought refuge in the tent of a woman named Jael.

He thought he was safe. He wasn’t.

Jael waited until Sisera was asleep, picked up a tent peg and hammer, and ended the threat herself.

It’s a violent story. An uncomfortable story. But it’s also a story about courage, decisiveness, and an ordinary person being willing to act when the moment came.

And strangely enough, there’s something in that for jiu-jitsu.

BJJ teaches us that strength doesn’t always look the way the world expects it to.

The smaller person can control the larger one.
The underestimated person can become dangerous through skill.
Calm can defeat panic.
Technique can overcome brute force.

But none of that happens accidentally.

You train the movement before you need it.
You practice staying calm while someone is putting pressure on you.
You learn to recognize an opportunity and when it appears, you act.

Jael didn't win because she looked like the strongest person in the story.

She won because when her moment came, she had the courage to move.

That lesson reaches far beyond the mats.

There will be moments when doing what is right requires courage. Moments when fear tells you to freeze. Moments when you feel too small, too inexperienced, or too insignificant to make a difference.

But Scripture repeatedly reminds us that God is not limited by what the world considers impressive.

“Most blessed of women be Jael.” ~Judges 5:24

Train your body to remain composed under pressure.

Train your mind to recognize the moment.

And train your heart to have the courage to act when God places something in front of you.

Because sometimes victory doesn't come through the person everyone expected.

Sometimes it comes through Jael.

Shawn Melanson is coming to Leake BJJ for a No-Gi seminar, and if you like your jiu-jitsu technical, aggressive, and mildly disrespectful to the human skeleton… you should probably be there.

Come sharpen your game, pick up new weapons, and spend a few hours questioning everything you thought you knew about grappling.
