College doesnโ€™t have to cost your family a fortune.

I recently joined ๐—ฃ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜๐˜€ & ๐—ง๐—ฒ๐—ฒ๐—ป๐˜€ ๐—ฅ๐—ถ๐˜€๐—ถ๐—ป๐—ด! to talk about how families can approach college with a clearer plan, including scholarships, college costs, and the decisions that can dramatically affect what you ultimately pay.

The takeaway isnโ€™t that every student will receive that amount. Itโ€™s that families often have more opportunities than they realize when they understand how to position their student, build the right college list, and approach scholarships strategically.

I've watched 2,700 families go through this. The ones who overpay all made the same first move.

They built the college list first and thought about money second.

It sounds harmless. It's the single most expensive sequence in college planning. Because by the time you've got a list of eight schools your kid is emotionally attached to, your leverage is gone. You're not choosing anymore. You're reacting to whatever the offers say.

The families who do well flip it. They find out early which schools would actually compete for their student, what each one is likely to cost them, and where the merit money lives. Then they build the list.

Same kid. Same grades. Wildly different bill.

That's why I started College Ready Plan. Not because families are doing this wrong out of carelessness. Because nobody tells them the order matters, and you only go through it once.

Our families have earned over $80 million in scholarships and grants. That's not luck. That's sequence.

Progress isnโ€™t measured by how packed their calendar was. Itโ€™s about what they learned, explored, accomplished, and discovered about themselves along the way.

Now is the time to reflect on what worked and use those experiences to make smarter decisions for the school year ahead.

Because a meaningful summer shouldnโ€™t just end, it should help shape what comes next.

Not sure what your studentโ€™s next step should be?

"We make too much to qualify for aid" is the most expensive sentence in this entire process.

I hear it constantly. And the families who say it are often the ones overpaying the most.

Here's what that sentence gets wrong.

Aid is not one thing. Need-based aid is income-sensitive. Merit scholarships are not. Tuition discounts are not. A school that wants your student will discount to get them, and it does not check your tax return first.

There are also ways to improve your eligibility that have nothing to do with earning less. How assets are positioned. Which year the money moves. What the business looks like on paper, if you own one.

So no, you might not be a need-based family. That's fine. That's not where most of the money is anyway.

The mistake isn't making too much. The mistake is deciding you don't qualify and never checking.

Everyone tells you to open a 529. Almost nobody tells you when it works against you.

A 529 is a good tool. It is not a universal tool, and the way it's counted can quietly change your aid picture.

What families don't get told:

Whose name it's in matters. Money in the parent's name and money in the student's name are not treated the same way when aid gets calculated.

Grandparent-owned accounts have their own rules, and the rules have changed. What was true five years ago may not be true for your cycle.

Timing matters. When money moves, and in what year, can affect what you qualify for. There's a window where it counts and a window where it doesn't.

And if you own a business, the 529 is often not even the most efficient move available to you.

None of this means don't save. It means the default advice is generic and your situation isn't. Before you put another dollar anywhere, find out how that dollar gets counted.

Tell me what grade your student is going into, and I'll tell you the one thing to do this month.

Seriously. Drop the grade in the comments. 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th, or college transfer. I'll reply to every single one with the single highest-value move for that stage.

No pitch. I just watch too many families spend a whole year on the wrong thing.

Comment your student's grade. I'm answering all of them today.

College applications have changed, and even parents who have been through college themselves can be surprised by how overwhelming the process feels today.

In our newest episode of Parents: Is Your Teen College Ready?, Shellee sits down with College Ready parent Rocky Dendo to talk about what his family learned along the way.

They discuss why starting early mattered, how structure and guidance helped his daughter stay ahead of applications and deadlines, and the skills she developed throughout the processโ€”from time management and independence to discovering interests that helped shape her college path.

Rocky also shares the advice he wishes more parents knew before senior year.

Scholarships can make a big difference, but waiting until senior year or applying randomly can mean missed opportunities.

A better approach? Start early and get strategic.

Know the deadlines. Track requirements. Prepare materials ahead of time. Focus on scholarships that truly fit your student.

๐ŸŽ“ The goal isnโ€™t to apply for every scholarship. Itโ€™s to pursue the right opportunities with a plan.

Barry thought getting in was the win. Then we found the money.

His daughter was a strong student with a big dream school. Barry's actual fear wasn't rejection. It was the version where she gets in, they celebrate, and then they're locked into paying full price for four years while his retirement quietly takes the hit.

So we didn't start with the application. We started with the list.

We looked at which schools would compete for a student like her, positioned the application so she'd stand out at those schools specifically, and targeted scholarship and grant money at each one.

She got into the University of South Carolina. With scholarship and grant money on top.

Here's what Barry said: ""Thanks to College Ready not only did my daughter get in to USC, she also got a scholarship and grant money.""

That's the whole point. Getting in is half. Getting in without wrecking your finances is the actual win.
