These pictures show what the pre-2026 World Cup tournament work-in-progress looked like through NJ TRANSIT, as IAB member Chrissa Roessner, P.E. documented in early June. With the finals just around the corner, it’s amazing to see how much the system has shifted to bring the tens of thousands of fans from around the world to The Garden State ⚽️

• , leading the design
• Anselmi & Decicco, Inc., leading the construction
• teams led by Binu Thomas, Albert Yannarelli (PM) and Evan Godwin (CM)

As Roessner mentioned, “Capacity, innovation, and efficiency don’t appear overnight. They’re built by capable, adaptable, committed teams. Proud to have played a small part in bringing this to life for the 2026 World Cup games in NJ.”

True construction safety doesn’t start when the hard hats go on; it starts the moment the pen hits the paper ✍️

It was an absolute privilege for IAB chair Maurice Rached to speak as a panelist at the 2026 Port Authority of NY & NJ (PANYNJ) Safety Fair, tackling a question fundamental to our industry: How do we bridge the gap between engineering design and field ex*****on?

When we look at the lifecycle of major infrastructure, the most effective “protective system” an engineer can deploy isn't made of hydraulic aluminum or timber. It’s Prevention through Design.

They had a fantastic, candid discussion about what it actually takes to build a unified safety culture:
Breaking the silos: Moving away from the mindset of "that's a contractor issue" to treating constructability and field safety as core design constraints.
Shared language: Closing the communication gap between the consultants drafting the specs in the office and the maintenance crews putting shovels in the ground.
Proactive literacy: Utilizing high-fidelity subsurface data early so that field crews aren't left "discovering" hazards with a backhoe.

Rached would like to give a massive thank you to the PANYNJ Agency Safety Management team for organizing such a high-caliber event and to his fellow co-panelists for the great dialogue. When owners, engineers, and contractors sit at the same table to talk about the reality of the field, the entire industry gets safer.

NJIT CEE Industrial Advisory Board member Muhammad Elgammal led his graduate students on a field visit to the World Trade Center site in Lower Manhattan to conclude the semester. At the World Trade Center complex, the visit focused on the architectural and engineering features of the site, with emphasis on the interplay between aesthetics, engineering performance, safety, and user experience
