Here’s why you don’t follow through on your intentions.

behavioral studies found that people who said “I will do X” followed through at significantly lower rates than people who said “When Y happens, Then I will do X.”

People decided “When Y happens, Then I will do X” follow-through rates increased by 2 to 3 times compared to the people who relied on vague intentions and willpower alone.

These statement structures are called implementation intentions.

Maybe you’re reading this in an atgenot to disctract yourself while you should be completing work — So here’s one of my favorite implementation intentions to get you refocused.

IF I catch myself reaching for my phone during mission work, THEN I write down one thing I just completed — even if it’s small.

Why do this?

BECAUSE you’re rewiring a dopamine pattern, not fighting willpower — tracking progress creates the hit your brain’s actually seeking.

By writing down a win instead, you’re replacing the distraction with a more productive dopamine hit.
