Join our conversation, whose title is the middle verse of a much-cited proverb attributed to the Babylonian Hebrew sage Hillel the Elder: If I am only for myself, who will be for me? If I am only for myself, who am I? If not now, when?

Presented by NYU Casa Italiana Zerilli Marimò, CUNY Calandra Institute, and Centro Primo Levi. Keynote by Andrea Fiano. Conversation with Stefano Albertini, Alessandro Cassin, Anthony Tamburri, and Natalia Indrimi.

For twenty-five years, the three presenting organizations have worked together to bridge historical research and the memory of societies and states that, a century ago, dismantled emerging democracies. These powers silenced dissent, thwarted the meaning of labor, waged wars, and systematically classified, expelled, persecuted, and murdered Jewish citizens and other groups. What challenges do we face as we continue this work today, in an era of ever more perfected assaults on humanity? How can we understand this history in a society obsessed with identities, fears, and conspiracies, where people are unable to see themselves in others? Join the conversation.
